Description

Armand Rousseau’s Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 is a benchmark Burgundy from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most revered domaines. This is a powerful yet supremely refined Pinot Noir that captures the depth and energy of the Chambertin climat, even in a warm vintage. Sought after by collectors worldwide, it offers a rare combination of concentration, precision and age‑worthy structure that has made Rousseau’s Chambertin a modern legend.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with a youthful, almost electric intensity at the rim. The nose opens gradually, revealing layered aromas of sweet raspberries and ripe cherries intertwined with notes of orange zest, incense, delicate rose petal and subtle exotic spice. With air, hints of forest floor, fine tobacco and a whisper of smoky minerality emerge, underscoring its complexity. On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and multi-layered, yet remarkably precise and penetrating. The core of pure red and black berry fruit is wrapped in ultra-fine tannins and supported by a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the wine lifted and focused. There is a palpable sense of depth and reserve – this is one of the least evolved wines in the cellar at this stage, built clearly for the long haul. The finish is long, detailed and saline, suggesting superb aging potential over 20–30 years or more in a good cellar, with its best drinking likely from the early 2030s onward.

Production
Sourced from the iconic Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine reflects a mosaic of limestone and marl soils that lend both power and precision to Pinot Noir. The 2022 growing season was warm, yet Rousseau’s old vines and meticulous vineyard work preserved freshness and balance, with careful canopy management and strict green harvesting ensuring concentration without excess. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously, and vinified with a restrained, classical approach—often incorporating a proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity and structure. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats with gentle extraction, followed by élevage in carefully selected French oak barrels, a portion of which is new, to refine texture and build depth without overpowering the terroir’s expression.

Food & Serving
This Chambertin Grand Cru deserves equally noble cuisine: think roast pigeon or duck, venison with a red wine and berry jus, slow-braised beef cheeks, or a rack of lamb with wild mushrooms and root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with refined game bird dishes, truffled poultry, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in large Burgundy stems, and decant gently for 1–2 hours in its youth to help the bouquet unfurl. For bottles with more age, a shorter, careful decant—or even serving directly from the bottle—is recommended to preserve the wine’s most delicate tertiary nuances.

Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s true reference estates, based in Gevrey-Chambertin and renowned for crafting some of the region’s most profound Pinot Noirs. Founded in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau and expanded over generations, the domaine was a pioneer in bottling and exporting its own wines, helping to establish Burgundy’s global reputation. Today, Rousseau holds prized parcels in many of Gevrey’s greatest grands crus, with Chambertin itself standing at the pinnacle of the range. The estate is celebrated for its traditional, terroir-driven style—favoring old vines, careful handwork in the vineyards, and a restrained, classical élevage—which has earned it a near-mythical status among collectors and cemented its significance as a benchmark for Grand Cru Burgundy.
