Description
Argentiera Bolgheri Rosso Villa Donoratico 2023 is a refined Tuscan red from one of the most coastal and characterful sites in the DOC Bolgheri zone. Made from a classic Bordeaux-style blend, it reflects both the maritime freshness and the depth that have made Bolgheri one of Italy’s most exciting modern wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby color with youthful brilliance. The nose is layered and inviting, opening with ripe blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry, followed by notes of Mediterranean herbs, cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice from oak aging.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a supple, balanced structure. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc bring tension and aromatic lift, while Merlot adds roundness and Petit Verdot contributes color and grip. It has excellent aging potential and should continue to gain complexity over the next 8–10 years, or longer in a good cellar.
Production
Tenuta Argentiera’s vineyards sit in Alta Maremma, in the southern part of Tuscany, close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate’s vines benefit from exceptional sun exposure and constant ventilation, with maritime influence helping preserve freshness and optimal ripening. The grapes are harvested by hand and selected twice on sorting tables before each variety is vinified separately.
Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel tanks for around 20–25 days at a controlled 28°C. The wine then matures for 12–14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, during which malolactic fermentation is completed. After bottling, it rests for a further 10 months before release.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with grilled steak, roast lamb, braised beef, game, and rich pasta dishes with meat sauces. It also works well with aged pecorino and hard, savory cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth.
Producer
Tenuta Argentiera is one of the standout estates in Bolgheri, known for its prime coastal vineyards and its strong focus on precision, elegance, and terroir expression. With 500 hectares of land and 75 hectares under vine, the estate has become a key name in the DOC Bolgheri landscape, particularly for its vineyard sites closest to the sea. Its wines have earned a reputation for combining concentration with freshness and regional authenticity.
