Description

Ardbeg An Oa is a characterful Islay single malt that brings the distillery’s famed peat smoke together with an unexpected softness and sweetness. Named after the wild Mull of Oa at the southern tip of Islay, it’s crafted as a more rounded, approachable expression of Ardbeg’s distinctive style. The whisky is uniquely composed from different cask types married together, creating a complex yet beautifully balanced dram that still speaks clearly of its Atlantic, peat-laden home.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ardbeg An Oa shows a bright, clear golden hue with a slight oily cling, hinting at good texture and weight. The nose is layered and inviting: classic Ardbeg smoke rises first—woodsmoke, coal tar and smouldering peat—followed by notes of toffee, treacle and salted caramel, with hints of aniseed, black pepper, clove, grilled citrus and a gentle nuttiness. On the palate, the whisky is surprisingly creamy and rounded for such a peaty malt. Sweet flavours of honey, vanilla fudge and milk chocolate are quickly joined by smoky barbecue notes, dark treacle, roasted coffee beans and a touch of dried fruit from the sherry casks. There’s a pleasant interplay of spice—cinnamon, nutmeg, cracked pepper—wrapped in a velvety, smoky sweetness. The finish is long, warming and smoky, with lingering notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and salted licorice. While it’s a no-age-statement whisky, An Oa drinks with the poise of a well-matured malt and will keep happily in the bottle without further evolution once opened, aside from softening slightly over time.

Production
Ardbeg An Oa draws its character from Islay’s rugged south coast, where the distillery sits on the shoreline facing the wild Atlantic. The peat used to dry the barley is rich in coastal vegetation, contributing to Ardbeg’s famously intense smokiness. For An Oa, the distillery combines whiskies aged in a mix of cask types: Pedro Ximénez sherry casks add richness and dried fruit, charred virgin oak brings spice and structure, and ex-bourbon barrels contribute vanilla and citrus brightness. These components are then slowly married together in a large French oak ‘Gathering Vat’ in Ardbeg’s refurbished Gathering Room, allowing the different elements to harmonise before bottling at 46.6% ABV without chill-filtration, preserving texture, aroma and flavour.

Food & Serving
Ardbeg An Oa pairs brilliantly with robust, savoury flavours and rich textures. Think smoked or grilled meats (chargrilled steak, BBQ ribs, smoked brisket), rich game dishes, or slow-cooked lamb. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses, smoked cheddar, blue cheese, or dark chocolate desserts with sea salt. Serve neat at around 16–20°C (60–68°F) to let the aromas open up; a few drops of water can reveal more sweetness and spice. Decanting isn’t necessary, but letting the whisky rest in the glass for a few minutes before sipping will help the smoky and sherried notes fully unfold.

Producer
Founded in 1815 on Islay’s southern coast, Ardbeg has become one of the most iconic names in peated single malt Scotch whisky. Long admired by enthusiasts for its intensely smoky yet surprisingly complex style, the distillery has weathered periods of closure and revival to emerge as a benchmark for Islay whisky. Under modern stewardship, Ardbeg has combined traditional methods—floor-malted barley in its heritage, long fermentation and slow distillation—with inventive cask management and limited releases that have captivated collectors. Expressions like An Oa showcase Ardbeg’s ability to retain its powerful maritime peat character while exploring new, more approachable and layered dimensions of flavour, securing its reputation as a leading innovator on Islay.
