Description
Antonelli Trebbiano Spoletino Trebium Bio 2022 is a characterful white from the rolling hills of Umbria, crafted entirely from the native Trebbiano Spoletino grape. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards around Montefalco and Spoleto at about 350 meters above sea level, it offers both generosity of aroma and remarkable precision on the palate. Made from massale-selected vines and fermented in large oak casks, this is a distinctive, terroir-driven expression of one of central Italy’s most intriguing white varieties.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trebium shows a luminous straw to pale gold color, with hints of deeper yellow that suggest both ripeness and texture. The nose is immediately inviting: ripe apricot and mirabelle plum lead the way, wrapped in beeswax and acacia honey notes, with a subtle herbal edge and a gentle floral lift.
On the palate, the wine is surprisingly linear and focused despite its opulent bouquet. The ripe stone-fruit flavors are carried by a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity and a firm, minerally backbone. There is a fine, almost flinty salinity and a touch of dried herbs in the long, clean finish. This is a structured, serious white with enough concentration and acidity to age gracefully for 4–6 years from the vintage, developing more honeyed, nutty and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
The Trebium Trebbiano Spoletino is sourced from estate vineyards in Umbria’s Montefalco–Spoleto area, planted at around 350 meters above sea level on soils that combine clay, limestone and alluvial components, giving both richness and a marked mineral tension. All the vines derive from a meticulous massale selection of Antonelli’s best old plots, preserving local clonal diversity rather than relying on nursery clones. Certified organic, the grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then undergo a short maceration on the skins with whole berries to gently extract aromatics and texture. After a soft pressing, the must is fermented in large, neutral oak casks, which add breadth and complexity without overt wood flavor, and the wine is left on fine lees to enhance mouthfeel and stability before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Trebbiano Spoletino is an excellent match for richly flavored yet refined dishes: think grilled or baked sea bass with herbs, seared scallops, prawn risotto, or roasted chicken with lemon and thyme. It also pairs beautifully with pecorino from central Italy, burrata, vegetable-based pasta dishes, and lightly spiced cuisine such as saffron-infused risottos. Serve at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 20–30 minutes is optional but recommended for maximum expression, especially if enjoyed within the first couple of years after release.
Producer
Antonelli San Marco is one of Umbria’s historic estates, with roots in Montefalco dating back to the 19th century. Over time, the family has become a benchmark producer in the region, known above all for its expressive Sagrantino and thoughtful work with indigenous varieties like Trebbiano Spoletino. The estate is fully organic and places strong emphasis on estate-grown fruit, traditional winemaking and a clear sense of place. Their wines regularly feature among the most respected examples from Montefalco, helping to elevate Umbria’s reputation for distinctive, ageworthy reds and characterful, textured whites such as Trebium.
