Description
Antonelli Sagrantino di Montefalco Chiusa di Pannone DOCG Bio 2015 is a powerful, single-vineyard expression of Umbria’s flagship red, crafted exclusively from organically grown Sagrantino. This is a wine made for patience and contemplation, standing in the same league of longevity as Barolo or Amarone, yet with a distinctly Umbrian soul. From the historic Chiusa di Pannone vineyard, it captures the depth, structure and wild, aromatic intensity that have made Montefalco one of Italy’s most exciting red wine appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 shows a deep brick-red core with a subtle violet rim, signalling both maturity and plenty of life ahead. The nose is engaging and complex: bright notes of orange zest, mandarin peel and candied ginger mingle with darker, earthy tones of tobacco leaf, forest floor and peat. Layers of sweet-smoky barbecue sauce, black forest fruits such as elderberry and blueberry, sour-cherry liqueur and dark nougat chocolate add further richness and intrigue, while fresh, herbal hints of mint and lemon balm lend lift and freshness.
On the palate, this Sagrantino is full-bodied and structured yet surprisingly refined, with tannins that have evolved into a fine, velvety powder. They blanket the mouth with a completely dry, soft and harmonious feel, carrying flavours of black berries, cocoa, spice and subtle balsamic notes through a long, savoury finish. Already beautifully drinkable with a decant, it still has several years—if not a decade—of graceful development ahead, gaining in tertiary complexity while maintaining its core of fruit and structure.
Production
Chiusa di Pannone is a single, organically farmed vineyard within the rolling hills of Montefalco in Umbria, rooted in clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The warm continental climate, moderated by altitude and cooling breezes, guides Sagrantino to full phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity and carefully sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. In the cellar, traditional vinification with extended maceration allows for a slow, gentle extraction of colour, tannin and aroma. The wine is then aged in wood and bottle for several years, giving the naturally robust Sagrantino time to integrate and evolve into a layered, ageworthy red.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that thrives alongside rich, flavourful dishes: slow-braised lamb shanks, beef short ribs, wild game stews, grilled ribeye, or hearty ragùs over pappardelle all highlight its depth and structure. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, mature hard cheeses, and dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or smoked components. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Burgundy or large Bordeaux stems. Decant for at least one hour—longer if opened in its youth—to soften the tannins, awaken the aromatics and fully reveal the complexity of this single-vineyard Sagrantino.
Producer
Antonelli San Marco is one of the historic estates of Montefalco, with roots in Umbria stretching back to the 19th century. Over time, the family has become a benchmark producer for Sagrantino, playing a key role in the development and recognition of the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG. Fully committed to organic viticulture, Antonelli farms its vineyards sustainably, focusing on terroir expression and varietal purity. The Chiusa di Pannone bottling sits among their most prestigious cuvées, regularly earning critical acclaim and helping cement both the estate’s reputation and the status of Montefalco as a source of some of Italy’s most serious and ageworthy red wines.
