Description
Muffato della Sala is one of Antinori’s most distinctive sweet wines, crafted in Umbria from grapes affected by noble rot and harvested late in the season for remarkable concentration. The result is a refined dessert wine with a balance of richness, freshness, and aromatic complexity, rooted in a style inspired by the great botrytized wines of Europe.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a luminous golden hue that hints at its richness. The nose is layered and inviting, with notes of dried apricot, citrus peel, honey, candied fruit, and delicate floral spice, while the influence of Botrytis adds depth and a subtle savoury nuance.
On the palate, it is lush and concentrated yet beautifully lifted by acidity, with flavors of ripe stone fruit, orange marmalade, tropical fruit, saffron, and honeyed herbs. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, making it a wine with excellent aging potential that can continue to evolve gracefully for years.
Production
Produced at Castello della Sala in Umbria, Muffato della Sala comes from carefully selected grapes including Grechetto, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Traminer Aromatico. The vineyards benefit from morning fog and autumn mists that encourage Botrytis cinerea, and the grapes are harvested late in October and November in multiple passes to pick only the best botrytized bunches. The resulting wine is vinified to preserve aromatics and the natural balance between sweetness and acidity.
Food & Serving
Serve Muffato della Sala lightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to showcase its aromatic precision. It pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, blue cheese, foie gras, almond tart, and pâté, and it can also be enjoyed on its own as a luxurious finish to a meal. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief aeration can help if the wine is particularly tightly knit on opening.
Producer
Castello della Sala, part of the Antinori family estate, is one of Umbria’s most respected wine properties and has played an important role in establishing the region’s reputation for high-quality white wines. Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with a legacy spanning more than six centuries. The estate is especially known for combining tradition, innovation, and a deep sense of place, and Muffato della Sala stands out as one of its most admired sweet wine achievements.
