Description

Anne de Joyeuse Very Chardonnay 2024 is a richly textured, 100% Chardonnay from the cool, elevated upper Aude Valley in Languedoc-Roussillon. Hand-harvested and matured in French oak, it combines generous fruit, fresh mountain-influenced character and a creamy, brioche-scented finish. Produced sustainably by Cave Anne de Joyeuse, a cooperative founded in Limoux in 1929, it reflects the region’s evolution from traditional red varieties towards refined international grapes.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a bright straw-yellow colour with attractive golden highlights. Its expressive nose opens with fresh notes of hay, acacia, citrus and ripe peach, followed by the delicate toast and brioche aromas imparted by French oak. On the palate, Very Chardonnay is full-bodied and flavourful, with a pleasing balance between fresh fruit and creamy oak-derived richness. Citrus and peach notes carry through, while the extended barrel ageing adds complexity and a smooth, rounded finish. It is enjoyable now, but should develop additional harmony over the next few years when well stored.

Production
The Chardonnay grapes come from sustainably farmed vineyards in the upper Aude Valley, where red clay, limestone and gravel soils combine with a Pyrenean climate of warm days and cool nights. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand before the must is transferred directly into 220-litre French oak barrels. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, followed by a further eight to nine months of ageing in the same casks, building the wine’s creamy texture and layered character.

Food & Serving
A versatile choice as an aperitif, this Chardonnay pairs particularly well with asparagus, creamy pasta dishes, grilled or roasted fish and seafood. Its freshness and oak richness also complement goat’s cheese, while its ripe fruit profile makes an appealing match for fresh figs and ice cream. Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help reveal its aromatic complexity.

Producer
Cave Anne de Joyeuse was founded in 1929 in the Haute Vallée de l’Aude, within the Limoux area of Languedoc. Although Limoux is especially renowned today for its sparkling wines, the cooperative has traditionally focused on still red wines and later expanded its range of white wines. Like many Languedoc producers, it gradually moved away from Carignan towards varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, while maintaining a strong connection to the region’s distinctive high-altitude, Pyrenean-influenced vineyards.
