Description

Angelo Negro Barolo 2020 is a Nebbiolo from Piedmont's Barolo district with rose and cherry, truffle and firm depth for long savoury drinking at the table. The 2020 release leans into rose, red cherry and truffle from the first swirl. Its oak-aged side shows as tobacco and leather, with tannins built for patience.

About the Wine
This Angelo Negro Barolo 2020 starts with Nebbiolo grown in the Barolo district on limestone, clay and Tortonian marl. In the glass, that soil mix reads through dark cherry skin, dried rose and a low truffle note after air. Sustainable certification is listed for this bottling, and the fruit feels clear, with a dry cherry core under the floral top note. The 2020 vintage expression here is ripe and savoury, with 14% alcohol, warm cherry flesh and a measured Barolo grip. The perfume is already detailed, yet the structure points to a wine that still has plenty of stored energy. In the cellar, this wine follows the long ageing path required for Barolo DOCG. It sees a minimum of 38 months total ageing, including at least 18 months in oak. The oak signature is savoury rather than sweet in feel. Tobacco leaf and leather sit close to the cherry fruit. By the end of the glass, the finish leaves dried cherry, rosehip and a faint mark of old wood spice.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in colour, with a clear brick glow at the rim and early signs of developing Nebbiolo spice around the edge of the glass. The nose opens with rose petals and ripe cherry, then adds truffle, tobacco leaf and a touch of polished leather after ten minutes in the glass. On the palate the Angelo Negro Barolo 2020 is dry and broad shouldered, with cherry skin, iron toned mineral grip and firm velvet tannins that hold the centre. Fine acidity draws out a long finish, and the required oak ageing reads as savoury seasoning, with cedar warmth and tobacco leaf returning after the swallow. Drink 2026-2040.

Food Pairing
Pour this Angelo Negro Barolo 2020 with red meat that has real browning on it, such as ribeye with rosemary salt or slow roasted beef shin. The wine's truffle and tobacco notes are excellent with game, especially venison loin, wild boar ragù or pheasant with mushrooms. For a Piedmontese route, serve brasato al Barolo or tajarin with a rich meat sauce and a little shaved truffle. Aged cheese also fits the tannin structure, with Castelmagno, Parmigiano Reggiano or mountain toma giving salt and savoury depth. Keep the seasoning earthy rather than sweet, and let the wine sit in a decanter before the first plate arrives.

Producer
Angelo Negro is based in Monteu Roero, on the Roero side of the Tanaro River, and the family is especially associated with aromatic Arneis from those sandy hills which makes this Barolo feel like a view across Piedmont from a Roero address. From that home base, the estate approaches Nebbiolo through perfume first, then through tannin shape and savoury detail held in a calm frame. Many drinkers first meet the Negro name through Roero Arneis, so this Angelo Negro Barolo 2020 is an interesting turn toward longer ageing and darker Nebbiolo tones with the same attention to scent. In this bottle, the house touch feels measured: rose and cherry appear before truffle, then tobacco and leather build only after the wine has opened. The producer's sustainable certification sits alongside a cellar style with clean fruit, legible oak and tannins polished into a fine suede texture across the long Barolo ageing. Leave a splash in the glass for an hour, and the empty bowl smells of rose petal, dried cherry and tobacco leaf from this 2020 release.
