Description

Angelo Negro Barbaresco Riserva 2020 is a Nebbiolo from Barbaresco in Piedmont with garnet depth and cherry-violet spice over long oak-aged grip and tea. This is the cellar-release side of Nebbiolo. The 2020 carries cherry flesh, dried violet and baking spice through a slow tannic finish. It suits a table with time, glassware and something roasted nearby.

About the Wine
This 2020 Barbaresco Riserva comes from Nebbiolo grown in the Barbaresco district, on limestone, clay and Tortonian marl. Those soils sit behind a dark garnet core and a savoury line of warm clay. Angelo Negro has framed the fruit as a Riserva, with the ripeness to carry 14.5% alcohol and the firmness expected from serious Nebbiolo skins. The dry profile keeps the cherry tone in skin, pit and pressed flower. Violet appears early in the aroma and stays tied to the wine’s earthy marl note. For the Angelo Negro Barbaresco Riserva 2020, the cellar follows the DOCG Riserva requirement of at least four years of ageing before release. At least two of those years are in oak, which shows here as baking spice, cedar and a slow polish on the tannins. The élevage has drawn the fruit toward dried cherry, rose petal and black tea. The palate carries a compact centre, then the finish stretches into clove and cherry stone. A faint cinnamon note lingers after the fruit has moved into a darker tea-like register.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet red in the glass, the Angelo Negro Barbaresco Riserva 2020 looks settled around the rim and still dense at the core after a slow swirl. The nose opens with ripe cherry and dried violet, then moves into clove, cinnamon bark and a touch of warm clay. On the palate the wine feels broad and vertical, with Nebbiolo tannins that run like fine suede across the tongue and hold the 14.5% alcohol in a firm frame of dry extract. The oak-aged Riserva character appears in tea leaf, cedar dust and baking spice over a dry cherry finish that keeps gaining savoury detail. Drink from 2025 to 2038.

Food Pairing
The 2020 Angelo Negro Barbaresco Riserva suits dishes with browned protein, slow-cooked juices and enough salt to meet its suede-like Nebbiolo tannins. Try roast venison with juniper and rosemary, or wild boar ragù over pappardelle, with the wine’s cherry stone and clove notes running beside the meat juices. A Piedmontese choice is brasato al Barbaresco, where beef, wine and aromatics give the Riserva a dark savoury partner at the centre of the table. For cheese, choose aged Castelmagno or a mature toma with a crumbly edge, as the wine’s violet and tea notes sit beautifully against salt and milk fat.

Producer
Angelo Negro is rooted in Monteu Roero on the north side of the Tanaro and the family name is closely linked with Roero Arneis and Nebbiolo from those sandy hills where the estate keeps its main identity. The estate traces its vineyard life back to 1670, a date tied to the Negro family story and to a farming culture older than the modern fame of Roero Arneis. That Roero base makes this Barbaresco Riserva 2020 a distinct part of the range, as Angelo Negro’s polished cellar style meets the firmer clay and marl language of Barbaresco for anyone who knows the producer through Roero. The producer’s concrete signature here is measured ageing, shown through tea leaf, baking spice and a careful tannin finish over a dry oak imprint that feels specific to this Riserva and its long DOCG-mandated rest. The house’s bottles carry clear perfume first, and this Barbaresco keeps that accent in violet and cherry after the structure has moved toward cedar dust, clove and black tea in the mouth. In this 750 ml bottle, the 14.5% alcohol reads as ripe Nebbiolo flesh and the final minutes in the glass leave warm cherry, clay-scented tannin and long spiced grip beside a slow fade of violet.
