Description
Anapea Village Nika Qvevri Red Dry 2022 is an expressive Georgian field blend crafted from 14 indigenous grape varieties, many of which are rare or nearly extinct. Made according to traditional Kakhetian methods and matured entirely in clay qvevri, it captures the soul of Georgia’s ancient winemaking culture in a deeply characterful, dry red. This is a bottle for curious wine lovers who want authenticity, history, and a true sense of place in their glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Nika Qvevri Red Dry 2022 shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby color with a slight translucent edge, hinting at both freshness and finesse. The nose is beguiling and layered: wildflowers and dried herbs mingle with aromas of ripe red and dark berries, plum, and a touch of forest floor, supported by subtle spice and a gentle, earthy minerality.
On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-bodied and beautifully textured, with fine-grained tannins and a lively, natural acidity that keeps everything in balance. Flavors of blackberry, sour cherry and ripe red currant are interwoven with notes of wildflowers, dried rose petals, and a delicate savory edge from the extended skin contact. The long, soft finish glides on notes of ripe fruit and gentle earth, leaving a persistent echo of spice and floral tones. Enjoyable now, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for around 6–8 years from the vintage, gaining further complexity with time.
Production
Sourced from vineyards in Kakheti, eastern Georgia’s most historic wine region, this wine reflects a terroir of sun-drenched slopes, stony soils and a continental climate that favors slow, even ripening. Anapea Village vinifies Nika as a true ‘Gemischter Satz’: 14 different native Georgian varieties, including rare and nearly lost grapes such as Simonaseuli and Akhmetis Shavi, are harvested and fermented together. The hand-picked grapes are placed into traditional clay qvevri buried in the earth, where they undergo spontaneous fermentation and spend six months on the skins and stems in the classic Kakhetian style. After pressing, the young wine remains in qvevri for a further two years of quiet maturation, and is then bottled without added sulfur, preserving its pure, unadorned expression of variety and place.
Food & Serving
This deeply characterful red pairs beautifully with rustic, flavorful dishes such as grilled lamb, braised beef, game stews, and slow-roasted pork. It also works wonderfully with Georgian cuisine—think khinkali (dumplings), khachapuri (cheese bread), and hearty bean dishes—as well as aged cheeses, mushroom-based plates, and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to let the wine’s wildflower, spice and earthy notes fully unfurl.
Producer
Anapea Village is a boutique producer in Georgia, dedicated to preserving the country’s ancestral grape varieties and time-honored qvevri winemaking traditions. Working in the historic Kakheti region—one of the cradles of viticulture—they focus on field blends of indigenous grapes, many of which are rarely seen outside Georgia and, in some cases, are close to extinction. By championing these varieties and fermenting in buried clay qvevri, Anapea Village plays a meaningful role in the revival and international recognition of Georgia’s 8,000-year-old wine culture, offering wines that are both culturally significant and compellingly distinctive in the glass.
