Description
Alvina Pernot’s Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru 2023 is a refined white Burgundy from one of the village’s most coveted Premier Cru vineyards. Crafted in tiny quantities, it captures the poise, chalky precision and quiet power that make Puligny-Montrachet so sought after among Chardonnay enthusiasts. This cuvée marries crystalline freshness with fine-grained texture, offering a detailed, terroir-driven expression of the 2023 vintage in Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale straw-gold hue with green glints, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is delicately chalky at first, with a subtle, stony minerality that gradually opens to white flowers, chamomile, citrus zest and hints of fresh almonds and barely-ripe stone fruit. It’s an understated but precise bouquet that gains complexity with air.
On the palate, the 2023 Les Pucelles is light on its feet yet clearly structured, marked by a fresh, linear attack and a fine, tensile acidity. Flavors of lemon cream, white peach and crisp pear are layered with chamomile, crushed limestone and a gentle, savory nuance. The finish is clean and persistent rather than opulent, emphasizing finesse over sheer power. While already approachable in its youth for those who enjoy a more primary, floral profile, it should develop additional depth, creaminess and nutty complexity over 5–10 years in a good cellar.
Production
Les Pucelles is a celebrated Premier Cru site in Puligny-Montrachet, known for its deep limestone subsoils, fine clay and excellent drainage, which together produce Chardonnay of great precision and elegance. The 2023 fruit is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic clarity, with careful sorting in the cellar to ensure only pristine grapes are used. Fermentation typically occurs in French oak barrels, with a judicious proportion of new wood to frame rather than dominate the wine, followed by élevage on fine lees to build texture and complexity while maintaining the hallmark Puligny tension and minerality.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru 2023 pairs beautifully with refined, delicately prepared dishes: think poached turbot or sole, butter-basted scallops, lobster with a light citrus-butter sauce, or roast chicken with morel mushrooms. It also works wonderfully with creamy but not overly pungent cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or mild goat’s cheese. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow both its floral notes and mineral spine to show. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in its youth can help the chalky, slightly reticent nose open up and reveal more nuance.
