Description
Alvina Pernot’s 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a powerful, chiselled expression of white Burgundy from one of the region’s most storied hillsides. Combining the energy of a cooler, high-altitude terroir with the precision and purity that have made this young domaine so sought-after, it delivers both immediate allure and serious cellar potential. As one of Burgundy’s great white Grand Crus, Corton-Charlemagne has long been revered for its ability to unite intensity, minerality and age-worthy structure—this 2023 bottling follows firmly in that tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale to medium straw hue with glints of green, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is refined yet expressive, offering layers of crushed limestone, cool white orchard fruits and citrus zest—think lemon oil, crisp pear and green apple—wrapped in subtle notes of flint, hazelnut and a delicate touch of fine French oak.
On the palate, the 2023 Corton-Charlemagne is precise and vertical, driven by a finely etched acidity that cuts through its ample concentration. The mid-palate is packed with juicy citrus, ripe pear and a hint of white peach, underpinned by a deep saline and chalky minerality that speaks clearly of its limestone slopes. Oak is present but carefully measured, bringing gentle spice, toast and creaminess without dulling the wine’s tension. The finish is long, focused and mouthwatering, promising significant development in bottle. While already impressive in its youth, this Grand Cru will reward patience; expect a graceful evolution over 10–15 years, and potentially longer in a cool cellar.
Production
Sourced from the steep, stony slopes of the Corton hill, this Grand Cru Chardonnay draws its character from thin, limestone-rich soils and a cooler, wind-exposed microclimate—ideal conditions for slow, even ripening and naturally vibrant acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal maturity, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the final cuvée. The juice is gently pressed and fermented in oak, with a proportion of new barrels used to add structure and complexity without overshadowing the terroir. Extended élevage on fine lees helps build texture and depth, while preserving the crystalline freshness and mineral backbone that define top-tier Corton-Charlemagne.
Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic white that shines alongside refined dishes: butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light beurre blanc, turbot or sole with a delicate cream sauce, or roasted poultry with morels and jus. It also pairs beautifully with fine, not-too-strong cheeses such as aged Comté or Beaufort, and simple dishes that let its minerality take center stage, like grilled turbot with olive oil and lemon. Serve slightly chilled, around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow its aromatics and texture to fully open. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to help the oak integrate and the wine unfurl; more mature bottles can be opened and poured directly, with a bit of time in the glass.
Producer
Alvina Pernot is one of Burgundy’s most exciting new-generation vigneronnes, building on the heritage of the famed Pernot family in Puligny-Montrachet. Granddaughter of renowned grower Paul Pernot, she established her own label with her husband to craft wines that marry traditional know-how with a more precise, terroir-driven approach. Though still relatively young as a domaine, Alvina Pernot has quickly gained a loyal following among Burgundy collectors and sommeliers for her ultra-fine, detailed whites from some of the Côte de Beaune’s most coveted sites, including premier and grand cru vineyards. Her work is seen as an important voice in the modern era of Burgundy, bringing clarity, freshness and a distinctly artisanal touch to some of the region’s greatest terroirs.
