Description
Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2021 is a refined single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most celebrated sites. Sourced from the historic Montosoli hill, it combines elegance, depth, and a distinctly mineral character that has helped make this cru one of Brunello’s most admired names.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a vivid ruby color with the structure and brightness that define great Brunello. The bouquet is lifted and precise, offering notes of red cherry, dried rose, wild herbs, and subtle spice, with a savory, earthy undertone that reflects its terroir.
On the palate, this is a poised and layered wine with firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, composed finish. Red berries, sour cherry, leather, tobacco, and mineral nuances unfold gradually, giving the wine both immediate appeal and strong aging potential. It will reward cellaring for many years, gaining complexity and silkier texture over time.
Production
The Montosoli vineyard lies on the northern side of Montalcino, an area prized for its cooler exposures, excellent drainage, and soils that help preserve freshness and aromatic precision in Sangiovese. The combination of altitude and hillside airflow contributes to slow, even ripening, while the distinctive mineral-rich terroir adds tension and finesse to the finished wine.
Harvesting is done carefully by hand, with grapes selected for purity and balance. After fermentation, the wine is aged in the traditional Brunello style, allowing the vintage and site to express themselves with clarity while building the structure and complexity expected of a top-tier cru bottling.
Food & Serving
This Brunello pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, pappardelle with mushrooms, lamb, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least one to two hours if drinking young, as this will help soften the tannins and open the wine’s aromatic profile.
Producer
Altesino is one of Montalcino’s most respected producers and has long played an important role in defining the modern reputation of Brunello di Montalcino. Known for its focus on quality, single-vineyard expression, and a balance between tradition and precision, the estate has earned a strong international following and is widely recognized for wines that age gracefully and reflect their origin with authenticity.
