Description
Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2019 in magnum format captures one of Tuscany’s most celebrated single vineyards in a beautifully poised, ageworthy expression. Sourced exclusively from the famed Montosoli hill, this Brunello combines depth, elegance and a distinctly saline minerality that has made the cru a benchmark for the region. First bottled as a single-vineyard Brunello in the 1970s, Montosoli is widely regarded as one of Montalcino’s “grand cru” sites, and the 2019 vintage shows the terroir at its most refined and harmonious.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Montosoli is a vibrant, medium-deep ruby with garnet hints just starting to emerge at the rim, indicative of its youth and serious structure. The nose is immediately alluring, weaving together ripe plum and blood orange with nuances of sage, violet, sweet pipe smoke and delicate inner florals. As it opens, subtle notes of cedar, crushed stone and warm spices add complexity without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, this is all about finesse and clarity. A silken wave of red cherry and plum glides across the tongue, layered with orange zest, savory herbs and hints of clove and anise. There is a striking interplay of ripe fruit, cool-toned acidity and salty, mineral undertones that recall the limestone-rich soils of Montosoli. Tannins are fine yet firm, providing a precise, youthful grip that promises impressive longevity. The finish is long and mouthwatering, with echoes of tangy cranberry, bitter orange and spice slowly fading. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: expect it to hit a beautiful drinking window from around 2027–2028 and evolve gracefully for 20+ years.
Production
Montosoli is a south- to southeast-facing hill just north of Montalcino, prized for its marl and limestone-rich soils, excellent drainage and a microclimate that combines warm days with cool nights. This terroir naturally emphasizes aromatics, elegance and minerality in Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso), and Altesino has long been a pioneer in expressing it as a single vineyard. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the healthiest clusters are used. After a gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, the wine undergoes a long maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. It is then aged traditionally in large Slavonian oak casks (and a portion in French oak), allowing the wine to develop complexity and polish while preserving the purity of fruit and the distinctive Montosoli character before bottling in magnum for extended, graceful maturation.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes: think Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, roast duck with herbs, wild boar ragù, or porcini mushroom risotto. It also shines alongside aged Pecorino Toscano and other firm, nutty cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is recommended, especially in its first decade: give the 2019 at least 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the aromatics to expand and the tannins to soften, particularly from magnum, which tends to evolve more slowly.
Producer
Founded in 1970, Altesino is one of the key reference estates in Montalcino and a pioneer in elevating Brunello to world-class status. The winery was among the first in the region to introduce both single-vineyard bottlings and more modern, quality-focused viticultural and cellar practices. Montosoli, in particular, was one of the earliest officially recognized single-vineyard Brunellos, helping to define the concept of cru terroirs in Montalcino. Today, Altesino is widely respected for its elegant, terroir-driven wines that balance tradition with precision, and its Montosoli bottling is consistently regarded as one of the most coveted and collectible expressions of Brunello di Montalcino.
