Description
Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2019 is a benchmark single-vineyard Brunello from one of Montalcino’s most revered crus. This wine captures the essence of the famed Montosoli hill: refined, aromatic, and deeply expressive, yet impeccably balanced. Crafted entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, it is a collectible Tuscan red that showcases both immediate charm and serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Montosoli reveals a luminous ruby garnet hue with brilliant clarity at the rim. The nose is seductive and layered, opening with ripe plums and blood orange, followed by notes of sage, sweet smoke, and hints of violet and dried rose petals. Subtle undertones of exotic spice and warm earth emerge with air, highlighting the wine’s complexity.
On the palate, it is elegant yet concentrated, gliding in with a silky wave of ripe red cherry, plum and redcurrant, framed by savory spices and a distinct saline minerality. The mid-palate is both supple and vibrant, with finely etched acidity that keeps the fruit fresh and lifted. Firm, polished tannins build gradually, leaving a precise, tactile finish marked by tangy cranberry, a gentle bitter hint of clove, and lingering floral notes. This 2019 is remarkably harmonious even in its youth, but built to age gracefully for 15–20+ years, gaining tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried herbs over time.
Production
Montosoli is one of Montalcino’s most prized northern slopes, a higher-altitude hill with marl and limestone-rich soils that naturally produce wines of finesse, perfume, and mineral tension. Altesino harvests the Sangiovese Grosso grapes for this single-vineyard Brunello by hand, selecting only the best clusters at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, gentle vinification is employed to preserve purity and elegance: temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration on the skins extract fine tannins and aromatic detail, followed by extended aging in carefully chosen large oak casks and barrels. The result is a Brunello that reflects the Montosoli terroir with precision, combining depth and structure with an unmistakable sense of place.
Food & Serving
Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2019 is a natural partner for refined Tuscan cuisine and hearty, savory dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, lamb chops with rosemary, braised beef, wild boar ragù, or aged pecorino and other hard Italian cheeses. It also shines alongside mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F), allowing the bottle to come gradually up from cool cellar temperature. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and fully open the aromatics; with extended bottle age, a shorter decant of about 30 minutes is sufficient to let the wine express its complexity.
