Description
Alta Mora Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo 2019 is a refined expression of Mount Etna’s volcanic slopes, crafted from old-vine Nerello Mascalese growing high above the Sicilian coastline. This single-vineyard red balances elegance and energy, capturing the fine-boned structure and perfume that have made Etna one of Italy’s most exciting regions. Feudo di Mezzo is one of the volcano’s historic crus, and this bottling showcases its unique character with precision and poise.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Alta Mora Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo 2019 shows a luminous, transparent ruby hue with garnet highlights at the rim, echoing the style of fine, cool-climate reds. The nose opens with pure red cherries, wild strawberries, and pomegranate, followed by notes of dried rose petals, blood orange zest, and crushed volcanic stone. Subtle layers of spice—white pepper, star anise, and a hint of tobacco leaf—add complexity as the wine unfolds.
On the palate, this Etna Rosso is medium-bodied, taut, and exceptionally fresh, with a linear mineral core and finely etched tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry coulis are wrapped in savory tones of herbs, tea leaf, and a faint smokiness derived from the volcanic soils. The finish is long, saline, and mouthwatering, with a firm backbone of acidity that promises graceful evolution in bottle. Enjoyable now with a bit of air, it has the structure and balance to age beautifully for 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining complexity and silkier texture over time.
Production
Feudo di Mezzo is one of Etna’s classic contrade (single vineyard areas), situated on the northern slopes of the volcano at significant altitude, where warm Sicilian sun meets cool mountain breezes. The basalt- and ash-rich volcanic soils are stony, well-drained, and poor in organic matter, naturally limiting yields and intensifying flavor. Nerello Mascalese—often from older vines—is harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle extraction to preserve the grape’s aromatic delicacy and fine tannic structure. The wine is then aged in a combination of neutral large casks and/or used barrels and tank, allowing the terroir’s purity, minerality, and tension to shine without heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
Alta Mora Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo 2019 is extremely versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes that echo its finesse rather than overpower it. Think roasted or grilled poultry, lamb chops with Mediterranean herbs, pork tenderloin, mushroom risotto, or classic Sicilian fare such as caponata, grilled tuna, and pasta with tomato, aubergine, and herbs. It also complements aged cheeses like Pecorino or Ragusano. Serve at 16–18°C (cool cellar temperature) to emphasize freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up its floral and mineral nuances, while more mature bottles can be gently poured without extended aeration to preserve their delicacy.
Producer
Alta Mora is the Etna-focused project of the Cusumano family, one of Sicily’s most respected wine dynasties, created to showcase the singular vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna. With meticulously chosen high-altitude parcels and a strong emphasis on native varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, Alta Mora has quickly become a reference point for modern Etna wines that still honor tradition. Their commitment to careful vineyard work, hand-harvesting, and terroir-driven winemaking has earned critical acclaim and helped cement Etna’s status as one of Italy’s most dynamic and sought-after regions. The Feudo di Mezzo bottling stands as one of the estate’s flagship reds, highlighting the elegance and depth this historic contrada can achieve.
