Alois Lageder Surmont Riesling 2023 is a precise, high-altitude white wine that showcases why Riesling thrives so beautifully in South Tyrol. Grown in the Rain di Penone vineyard, where steep slopes and cool mountain influence shape its character, it combines freshness, minerality, and elegant aromatic lift. The grape’s local history dates back to the mid-19th century, when Archduke Johann of Habsburg recognized the region’s potential for this variety.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a pale straw colour with bright reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and alpine clarity. The nose is typically expressive and refined, with aromas of citrus, green apple, white flowers, and a distinct mineral edge. On the palate, the wine should feel taut and lively, with crisp acidity, clean fruit, and a finely textured finish that reflects its mountain origin. Riesling from this kind of terroir can age gracefully, developing greater depth, complexity, and subtle petroleum notes over time.

Production
The grapes come from the Rain di Penone vineyard in Trentino-Alto Adige, a steep south-southeast-facing site with moraine soils that provide excellent drainage and mineral expression. At over 900 metres of altitude, the cooler conditions help preserve acidity and aromatic precision, making the site especially well suited to Riesling. Harvesting is typically done with care to preserve purity, followed by vinification aimed at highlighting freshness, varietal character, and terroir-driven finesse.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent match for seafood, shellfish, sushi, lightly spiced Asian dishes, roasted poultry, and fresh goat cheese. Serve it well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary unless you want to give the wine a little extra air in its youth.
