Tasting Notes
In the glass, Löwengang Uvaggio Storico 2020 shows a deep ruby core with subtle violet hues at the rim, suggesting both concentration and youth. The nose is nuanced and complex: blackcurrant, ripe red cherry and blackberry are layered with notes of violets, sweet tobacco, graphite, green peppercorn, cedar and a touch of dark chocolate and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet beautifully poised, with vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins that are firm but polished. Dark berry and currant flavors are joined by hints of plum, licorice, wild herbs and a subtle smoky-mineral character that reflects its Alpine origins. The finish is long, clean and savory, with a freshness that invites another sip. While already approachable with some air, this 2020 has very good aging potential; it should evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining tertiary notes of leather, truffle and cigar box with time.

Löwengang Uvaggio Storico is sourced from estate vineyards in Alto Adige, where the Alpine climate, pronounced day–night temperature swings and well-drained, calcareous and gravelly soils are ideal for structured but elegant Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity and to allow strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Alois Lageder focuses on gentle vinification: temperature-controlled fermentation with carefully managed maceration extracts color, aroma and tannin without harshness. The individual varieties are often vinified separately before blending, then matured in oak (a mix of barriques and larger barrels) to harmonize the components and add subtle spice, while maintaining the clarity and freshness that define the estate’s style.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as ribeye steak, lamb chops or venison, and is equally at home alongside braised beef, ragù-based pastas, mushroom risottos and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Asiago. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth helps the tannins soften and allows the layered bouquet to fully open; older bottles will need a gentler decant to separate any sediment.
