Almenkerk Wine Estate, Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Almenkerk Wine Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is a crisp, terroir-driven white from Elgin, one of South Africa’s coolest and most expressive wine regions. Made by Belgian-Dutch owners Natalie and Joris van Almenkerk, this estate bottling comes from a single vineyard and reflects a hands-on, sustainable approach that has helped establish Almenkerk as a name to watch.

Tasting Notes
Expect a bright, pale straw colour with lively green-tinged reflections. The nose is fresh and precise, with notes of citrus, gooseberry, green herbs and a subtle mineral edge, while a small portion matured in used oak adds quiet complexity rather than overt wood influence. On the palate, it is clean, focused and energetic, balancing zesty fruit with a taut, refreshing line of acidity. The single-vineyard fruit gives the wine depth and definition, and the cool Elgin climate contributes to its linear, elegant style. While immediately appealing in youth, it also has the structure to develop gracefully over a few years.

Production
Fruit for the Estate Sauvignon Blanc comes from Sunlight Block, a single vineyard sitting at around 300 metres above sea level in Elgin. The vines are dry-farmed during the growing season, encouraging deeper root growth and naturally concentrated fruit, while harvesting is carried out by hand in the early morning to preserve freshness. After fermentation, a small portion of the wine is matured in used oak barrels, adding texture and nuance without masking the vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with oysters, grilled fish, sushi, goat’s cheese, asparagus and fresh summer salads. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C to showcase its freshness and precision, and decanting is not necessary.

Almenkerk Wine Estate was founded in 2002, when Natalie and Joris van Almenkerk transformed a former apple farm into a boutique wine estate in Elgin. Today, the 32-hectare property includes more than 15 hectares of vines and is known for its meticulous, sustainable vineyard management and wines that clearly express the local terroir. The estate has earned attention not only for its Estate range, but also for its Lace wines, and its whites in particular are noted for their purity, consistency and impressive ageing potential.
