Description
Almenkerk Wine Estate’s Lace Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is a refined, cool-climate white from Elgin, one of South Africa’s most exciting regions for fresh, mineral-driven wines. It combines bright citrus character with real texture and length, making it as rewarding at the table as it is on its own. The Lace range takes its name from the traditional lace-making craft of Brugge, a subtle nod to the Belgian roots of the estate’s owners.
Tasting Notes
Pale and luminous in the glass, this Sauvignon Blanc shows the crisp, elegant profile that Elgin is known for. The nose is lifted and expressive, with grapefruit, pomelo and other citrus notes at the forefront, supported by a clean, refined freshness.
On the palate it is rounded rather than sharp, with juicy citrus fruit, a pleasing sense of weight and a long, graceful finish. It has enough structure to age well for several years, yet it is also beautifully enjoyable now for those who prefer Sauvignon Blanc with more depth and generosity.
Production
Almenkerk Estate is a relatively small winery in Elgin, where the cooler climate helps preserve freshness, aromatics and natural balance in the grapes. The estate was originally an apple plantation purchased in 2002 by Belgian-Dutch couple Natalie and Joris Almenkerk, who gradually transformed it into a vineyard property. Today, more than 15 hectares of the 32-hectare estate are planted to vines, producing both the Estate wines and the Lace range.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent food wine, especially with seafood, oysters, grilled fish, fresh salads, asparagus and goat’s cheese. Its citrus-driven profile and fuller texture also make it a strong match for lightly spiced dishes and Mediterranean cuisine. Serve chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is not necessary.
Producer
Almenkerk Wine Estate is a boutique producer in Elgin with a strong reputation for polished, age-worthy wines. Under the direction of Natalie and Joris Almenkerk, the estate has become known for combining cool-climate precision with impressive depth and aging potential. Their wines reflect both careful vineyard management and a clear sense of place, which has helped establish Almenkerk as one of the region’s noteworthy estates.
