Description
EPU is the second wine of Almaviva, the celebrated French-Chilean partnership created in 1997 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro. Produced in Puente Alto, it expresses the estate’s Bordeaux-inspired style in a more approachable format, combining Chilean freshness and ripe fruit with polished structure and refined oak influence.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage shows a deep ruby to garnet colour. Its nose is expected to reveal ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, alongside hints of cassis, cedar, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate, EPU is generous and smooth, with concentrated dark fruit, balanced acidity and supple, well-integrated tannins. A lingering finish brings notes of dark chocolate, herbs and gentle oak.
While approachable in its youth, the wine’s fruit concentration, acidity and tannic structure should allow it to develop further over the next several years when carefully stored. It can be enjoyed now after some aeration or kept for approximately 5–8 years, depending on storage conditions and personal preference.
Production
The grapes come from Puente Alto in Chile’s Maipo Valley, a renowned terroir for Cabernet-led red wines. The area’s gravelly, well-drained soils, warm days and cool evenings help produce ripe fruit with freshness and structure. After harvest, the must is cooled and kept in contact with the skins to extract colour and aroma. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, around the time the wine is transferred by gravity into new French oak barrels. The skins and seeds are gently pressed in basket presses, with a small proportion of the press wine incorporated into the final blend.
Food & Serving
Serve EPU at around 16–18°C. Its ripe fruit, freshness and supple tannins make it a natural match for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison, braised short ribs and hearty mushroom dishes. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth; older bottles generally require gentler handling and only brief aeration.
Producer
Almaviva was established in 1997 through a collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. and Viña Concha y Toro S.A., bringing together French winemaking expertise and Chilean vineyard knowledge. The first vintage was released in 1998 and achieved immediate international recognition. EPU, the estate’s second wine, offers a more accessible expression of Almaviva’s Puente Alto vineyards while retaining the precision, elegance and Bordeaux-inspired character for which the estate is known.
