Description

Almaviva 2023 is a distinguished French-Chilean red from Puente Alto, created through the collaboration of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro. Founded in 1997, the partnership produced its first vintage in 1998, achieving immediate international recognition. This release combines impressive depth and structure with a notably juicy, approachable character.

Tasting Notes
Deep, intense and almost opaque ruby-red in the glass. The nose is broad, beautifully layered and complex, revealing the concentration and refinement associated with Almaviva. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet exceptionally balanced, with a supple texture, vibrant acidity and remarkable elegance. Rounded, refined and polished tannins frame the juicy character of the 2023 vintage, while the finish is long and persistent. Although already accessible thanks to its smooth tannins, this is a serious wine with the concentration and structure to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
Produced in Puente Alto, Chile, Almaviva is made under the joint technical direction of its French and Chilean partners. The must is first cooled, then kept in contact with the grape skins to extract colour and aromatic richness. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, shortly before or after the wine is transferred by gravity into new French oak barrels. The skins and seeds are gently pressed in basket presses, with small quantities of press wine incorporated into the final cuvée. The wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Specific harvesting details and grape proportions are not provided.

Food & Serving
Its depth and polished structure make Almaviva an excellent match for premium grilled or roasted meats, beef tenderloin, lamb, venison and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It can also complement mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine’s layered aromas to open, particularly when enjoying it in its youth.

Producer
Almaviva was established in 1997 through an agreement between Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, then chair of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, chair of Viña Concha y Toro S.A. Their aim was to create an exceptional French-Chilean wine, bringing together French winemaking expertise and Chilean terroir. The first vintage, released in 1998, achieved immediate international success, and Almaviva has since become one of Chile’s most prestigious and recognisable fine-wine names.
