Description
Almaviva 2020 is a distinguished Chilean red from Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley, crafted as a Bordeaux-inspired blend with the depth and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon at its core. Created through the partnership between Château Mouton Rothschild’s former owner Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro, Almaviva has become one of Chile’s most internationally acclaimed fine wines since its first vintage in 1998.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour, the 2020 vintage opens with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and plums, complemented by cedar, graphite, tobacco and subtle spice. The palate is concentrated yet poised, combining generous dark-fruit flavours with polished tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, mineral finish.
Its refined structure and balance make it approachable with decanting, while the wine’s concentration and firm tannins suggest excellent ageing potential. Stored under suitable conditions, it should continue to develop greater savoury and earthy complexity over the next decade or more.
Production
The vineyards lie around Puente Alto in the Upper Maipo Valley, a region renowned for its cool nights, sunny days and gravel-rich alluvial soils—conditions that favour Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties. Almaviva is produced as a classic Bordeaux-style blend, typically led by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Careful vineyard selection, hand harvesting and precise vinification are followed by maturation in French oak, allowing the wine to develop depth while preserving the character of its terroir.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after decanting for 1–2 hours, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its powerful yet polished profile pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison, beef tenderloin, rich mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Almaviva was established in 1997 as a collaboration between the Rothschild family and Chile’s historic Viña Concha y Toro. Named after Count Almaviva from Beaumarchais’ celebrated play and Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro, the estate combines Bordeaux winemaking expertise with the distinctive terroir of Puente Alto. Today, Almaviva is regarded as one of Chile’s benchmark fine wines and a leading expression of the country’s potential for world-class Cabernet-based blends.
