Description
Aldo Conterno Barolo Gran Bussia Riserva 2015 is one of Piemonte’s true benchmark wines, crafted only in outstanding vintages and released after extended aging in the cellar. This is a powerful yet hauntingly elegant expression of Nebbiolo, drawn from some of the estate’s finest crus in the heart of Barolo. For collectors and serious Barolo lovers, Gran Bussia is a reference-point bottling that captures the soul of traditional, long-lived Barolo.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Gran Bussia Riserva shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, already hinting at its complexity and evolution. The nose is intensely layered and slow to unfurl, revealing dried rose petals, violet, sour cherry, macerated strawberries, blood orange, and wild herbs, followed by notes of tar, licorice, tobacco leaf, leather, truffle, and a fine mineral edge.
On the palate, this is both structured and finely detailed, with a taut spine of tannins that are firm yet beautifully polished. Flavors of red cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry compote are interwoven with savory notes of cedar, spice box, dried porcini, and iron-rich earth. The acidity is vibrant and refreshing, giving the wine lift and precision despite its depth. The finish is long, persistent, and complex, evolving in the glass with air. While already impressive, the 2015 has considerable aging potential; it will continue to develop and gain tertiary complexity over 15–25+ years if properly cellared.
Production
Gran Bussia is typically a blend of fruit from some of Aldo Conterno’s most prized vineyards in the Bussia cru of Monforte d’Alba, an area known for its calcareous clay soils and steep, sun-exposed slopes that yield Nebbiolo of great concentration and drive. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only the best clusters make it into the Riserva. Traditional Barolo vinification is followed: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics, tannin, and structure, and long maturation in large Slavonian oak casks (botti), allowing the wine to evolve slowly and harmoniously without excessive oak imprint. After several years in wood and further refinement in bottle, the wine is released as Riserva only when the estate deems it ready.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is at its best with richly flavored, slow-cooked dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, venison, game birds, and truffle-infused dishes from Alba. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Pecorino, and classic Piemontese specialties such as tajarin with ragù or risotto with porcini mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully open. Decanting is highly recommended—1.5 to 3 hours before serving in its youth, and around 1 hour for more evolved bottles—to let the wine shed its initial reserve and show its full complexity.
Producer
The Aldo Conterno estate, based in Monforte d’Alba in Piemonte, is one of Barolo’s most revered names, founded by Aldo Conterno in 1969 after leaving the family winery to pursue his own vision. Often referred to as the “King of Barolo” by admirers, Aldo combined deep respect for tradition with meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar, crafting wines that are both ageworthy and remarkably pure. The estate’s holdings in top sites such as Bussia have cemented its reputation as a leading producer in the region, and Gran Bussia Riserva stands at the very top of its range, produced only in great years and widely recognized as one of the most important and collectible Barolos of all.
