Description
Aldegheri Santambrogio Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2020 is a rich and elegant expression of one of Veneto’s most celebrated wine styles. Crafted by a family winery established in 1956, it combines the depth created by the traditional Amarone appassimento method with the freshness and balance that define Aldegheri’s wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour, with the concentrated appearance typical of Amarone. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of ripe dark berries, black cherries, plums and dried fruit, complemented by subtle spice and warming notes from maturation. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and generous, with velvety tannins, well-integrated alcohol and a fresh, balanced finish that prevents its richness from becoming heavy.
The 2020 vintage is approachable with decanting, but its structure and concentration will allow it to develop further in bottle over the next several years. Expect increasingly nuanced notes of dried fruit, spice and savoury complexity with age.
Production
Produced in the Classico area of Valpolicella in the rolling hills of Veneto, where the region’s varied hillside terroirs are well suited to creating concentrated yet balanced red wines. Amarone is made using the traditional appassimento process: carefully selected grapes are dried after harvest, concentrating their sugars, aromas and flavours before fermentation. Aldegheri combines this long-established practice with modern winemaking technology to preserve freshness, precision and balance.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich and flavourful dishes, this Amarone is well suited to braised beef, game, roasted lamb and slow-cooked meat dishes. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and hearty pasta dishes featuring mushrooms or intense meat sauces. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and decant for approximately 30–60 minutes to allow the wine’s aromas to open and its structure to soften.
Producer
Founded in 1956, Aldegheri remains a family-run winery with seven active family members involved in its work. The family owns more than 75 hectares of vineyards in the hills of Veneto and produces wines across the region’s diverse appellations, from Prosecco and Moscato to Valpolicella Ripasso and Amarone. By combining inherited experience and centuries-old traditions with modern technology, Aldegheri has established a reputation for refined, balanced wines marked by both regional character and freshness.
