Description
Albert Bichot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Amoureuses" 2018 in magnum is a profoundly seductive expression of one of Burgundy’s most coveted Premier Cru sites. Delicate yet intense, it marries Chambolle’s trademark finesse with a core of pure, vibrant fruit and remarkable length. Bottled in 1.5 L, this wine is built for graceful aging, allowing its full aromatic complexity and silken texture to unfold over 8–12 years or more.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chambolle-Musigny Amoureuses 2018 shows a luminous, deep ruby colour with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim in its youth. The nose is immediately captivating: wild strawberries, ripe raspberries and red cherries interwoven with rose petals, violets, subtle spice, fine tea leaf, and a delicate hint of chalky minerality.
On the palate, the wine is both refined and concentrated, with a supple, velvety attack that opens into layers of red berry fruit, pomegranate and blood orange zest. Silky tannins frame a very pure, precise core, while notes of sweet spice, forest floor and a lingering floral tone add complexity. The finish is long, lifted and ethereal, marked by a mouthwatering mineral freshness. In magnum format, this 2018 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed from now for its youthful energy, but will gain even more nuance, depth and harmony over the next 8–12 years, and potentially longer under ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
Les Amoureuses is one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most revered Premier Cru vineyards, situated just below the legendary Musigny on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits. The terroir is classic Chambolle: very thin, stony topsoils over limestone-rich subsoils with veins of clay, giving wines of striking finesse, perfume and mineral precision. Pinot Noir vines are typically farmed with great care, using low yields and rigorous sorting to capture only the healthiest, most concentrated grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to preserve the integrity of the clusters, followed by meticulous selection at the winery. Vinification usually involves gentle destemming, a cool pre-fermentation maceration, and temperature-controlled fermentation in small vats, with carefully managed punch-downs or pump-overs to extract fine tannins rather than power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a proportion of new oak appropriate to the vintage—to add subtle structure and complexity without masking the vineyard’s delicate aromatic character.
Food & Serving
Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is best paired with refined, delicately flavoured dishes that mirror its elegance. Think roast pigeon or duck breast, veal tenderloin with morels, truffled poultry, or refined game birds. It also complements dishes like mushroom risotto, mild lamb preparations, and aged but not overly strong cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or a well-aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C to highlight its aromatic lift and texture. In magnum, decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up, while older bottles should be decanted gently and briefly—just enough to separate from any sediment and allow the bouquet to unfold.
