Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Saint-Joseph Les Côtes shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive, with lifted notes of violets and crushed flowers wrapped around blackberries, dark cherries, and ripe stone fruits. Subtle layers of licorice, cracked pepper, and a touch of graphite add complexity without ever feeling heavy. Les Côtes is drawn from a parcel in Mauves, one of the historic heartlands of the Saint-Joseph appellation, where Syrah thrives on steep, sun-exposed slopes of decomposed granite and rocky soils. These poor, well-drained terrains naturally limit yields and intensify flavor, while the Rhône’s cooling breezes help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. The estate works organically and along biodynamic principles, with meticulous hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the winery. Fermentation is typically carried out with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, preserving the character of the fruit and site. The wine is then matured in older French oak barriques, which add texture and polish without imposing overt oak flavors, allowing the floral, spicy profile of northern Syrah and the minerality of Mauves to shine through.
