Description
Alain Voge Saint-Joseph Les Côtes 2017 is a pure, classically styled Northern Rhône Syrah that captures the elegance and spice of Mauves, one of the appellation’s historic villages. Sourced from a single parcel owned by former estate director Albéric Mazoyer, this cuvée is entirely destemmed and aged in older oak to showcase fruit, floral notes and terroir rather than wood. The 2017 vintage has already earned a reputation for balance and approachability in the Northern Rhône, and this wine is a beautiful example of that harmony.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Les Côtes shows a deep ruby to purple hue, with a vibrant, youthful edge. The nose is expressive and lifted, led by violet and crushed black pepper, wrapped around a core of ripe blueberry and dark cherry, with hints of graphite and a touch of smoked herbs.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet remarkably light on its feet, with a creamy, supple texture and fine-grained tannins. Blue and black fruits are framed by fresh acidity, giving the wine a sense of precision and drinkability rather than weight. The finish is fresh, silky and persistent, echoing floral tones and peppery spice. Already delicious and open, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more savory and tertiary complexity while retaining its elegance.
Production
Les Côtes comes from a single parcel in Mauves, one of the granitic heartlands of Saint-Joseph, where shallow, stony soils and steep slopes provide excellent drainage and low yields, naturally concentrating flavor. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then completely destemmed to emphasize fruit purity and aromatic clarity. Fermentation is carried out in tank, allowing gentle extraction of color, tannin and aromatics, before the wine is matured for 16 months in older oak barrels. The use of neutral wood avoids overt oak flavors and preserves the wine’s floral, peppery Syrah character and the mineral imprint of its terroir.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Joseph is a versatile food wine that shines alongside classic Rhône-friendly dishes such as grilled lamb chops, roast chicken with herbs, charcuterie, and duck breast, as well as earthy plates like mushroom risotto or lentils with sausages. It also pairs beautifully with semi-hard cheeses such as Tomme, Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up its violet, pepper and blueberry nuances, especially in its youth.
Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is one of the benchmark producers of the Northern Rhône, long celebrated for its deep commitment to traditional craftsmanship and the expression of terroir in appellations such as Cornas and Saint-Joseph. Founded in the mid-20th century and later elevated in status by Alain Voge’s focus on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and quality-driven practices, the domaine helped spearhead the renaissance of Cornas and raise the profile of Syrah from granite slopes. Today, the estate is recognized as a reference point for distinctive, ageworthy Rhône wines, marrying classic regional character with precision and finesse.
