Description

Alain Voge Saint-Joseph Côtes 2015 is a refined Northern Rhône red that captures the elegance and purity of Syrah from steep granite slopes. Sourced from relatively young vines replanted in 1999 in the historic commune of Mauves, it offers a modern, polished expression of this classic appellation. Aged exclusively in used barriques, it marries complexity and finesse with an inviting, early approachability.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Saint-Joseph Côtes shows a deep ruby colour with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is fragrant and open-knit, with notes of mixed red and black berries—think raspberry, blackberry and blackcurrant—layered with subtle hints of violet, cracked pepper, and a touch of smoked herbs and graphite. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a creamy, supple texture that reflects its élevage in older barrels. Juicy layers of mixed berries dominate, supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, mineral line typical of granite terroir. The finish is smooth and gently persistent, suggesting a wine that can be enjoyed young but has enough structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years from vintage.

Production
The grapes for Alain Voge’s Saint-Joseph Côtes 2015 come from vineyards in Mauves, one of the birthplace villages of the Saint-Joseph appellation, where Syrah thrives on steep, terraced granite slopes that provide excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral backbone. The vines, replanted in 1999, are carefully tended and harvested by hand due to the challenging terrain. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatics and purity of fruit, followed by aging exclusively in used barriques, which allow the Syrah to gain texture and complexity without overt oak influence, resulting in a wine that is focused, precise and terroir-driven.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Joseph Côtes 2015 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, roast duck, charcuterie, and hearty dishes such as braised beef or lamb ragù. It also works well with earthy vegetable preparations—mushroom dishes, lentil stews, or roasted root vegetables—and semi-hard cheeses like Tomme de Savoie or aged Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F); a brief decant of 30–45 minutes will help the wine open up its aromatic layers and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its youth.

Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is one of the benchmark producers of the Northern Rhône, particularly renowned for its work in Cornas and Saint-Péray, and respected for helping to elevate these once-overlooked appellations to international prominence. Established in the mid-20th century and driven by Alain Voge’s vision for quality and terroir expression, the estate has long championed meticulous vineyard work on steep, terraced slopes and sensitive, low-intervention winemaking. Their Saint-Joseph bottlings, including Côtes, reflect the same commitment to authenticity and finesse that has earned the domaine critical acclaim and a loyal following among Rhône enthusiasts worldwide.
