Description
Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes 2020 in magnum format is a powerful, old-vine northern Rhône Syrah built for the cellar. Sourced from some of Cornas’ best, steep granitic slopes, it delivers intensity, depth and classic Cornas character, wrapped in the extra aging potential that only a 1.5 L bottle can offer. This cuvée has become a benchmark for the appellation, uniting traditional craftsmanship with precise, contemporary winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cornas Vieilles Vignes shows an opaque, deep purple core with a violet rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive yet still tightly coiled, with lifted floral tones of violets and lilacs, layered over blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry, along with notes of crushed stone, graphite, pepper and a subtle touch of smoked meat and spice from its time in oak.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and powerful, with a firm backbone of tannin and vivid acidity that keeps the richness in check. Dark fruits—cassis, black plum and wild berries—are interwoven with savory nuances of tapenade, charcuterie, cracked black pepper and mineral-led granitic grip. The oak is well-judged, with only around 15% new barrels, lending gentle structure and spice rather than dominating. At this stage it feels “almost painfully unformed,” as Wine Advocate notes, pointing clearly to a long evolution ahead. In magnum, the wine’s aging potential is extended even further: expect it to hit its stride after 8–10 years, and to drink beautifully for 15–20+ years from vintage, gaining complexity, silkier texture and haunting tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers.
Production
Cornas Vieilles Vignes is drawn from a selection of old Syrah vines rooted in the classic, decomposed granite soils that define the amphitheater-like slopes of Cornas in France’s northern Rhône. These steep, terraced vineyards, often worked by hand due to their gradient, benefit from excellent sun exposure and cooling winds, producing low yields of intensely flavored fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted to ensure only perfectly healthy bunches make it into the cuvée. In the cellar, Alain Voge follows a traditional yet precise approach: fermentation with indigenous yeasts, often with a significant proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage’s character, followed by maturation in oak barrels, with only about 15% new oak to preserve the purity of fruit and the granitic expression. The extended élevage helps to tame Cornas’ naturally firm structure while maintaining its energy and typicity.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Cornas that shines alongside robust, savory dishes. Think grilled or roasted lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef, duck confit, game birds, venison, or dishes rich in umami such as beef daube, short ribs, or mushroom-based stews. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie, especially those with a hint of smoke. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and freshness. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for current drinking, and even longer if opened within the first 8–10 years. In maturity, a gentle 60–90 minute decant will help the wine fully blossom without stripping away its more delicate nuances.
Producer
Domaine Alain Voge is one of the historic standard-bearers of Cornas, instrumental in raising the appellation from a relatively rustic local secret to one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected sources of ageworthy Syrah. Founded in the mid-20th century, the estate gained renown under Alain Voge’s stewardship for its meticulous work on the region’s steep granitic slopes and its unwavering focus on expressing terroir. Based in the village of Cornas, the domaine has been a driving force in the appellation’s qualitative renaissance, championing low yields, careful vineyard work and thoughtful, minimally interventionist winemaking. Today, the estate is widely regarded as a reference point for Cornas and Saint-Péray, with its wines consistently earning high acclaim from international critics and collectors who seek authentic, long-lived northern Rhône Syrah.
