Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, with notes of crushed stone and graphite wrapped around dark and red berry fruit—think blueberries, blackberries and red currants—lifted by hints of mint, violets, pepper and a subtle savoury meatiness. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, velvety and precise, with a fine, tactile grip from well-knit tannins. The dark berry and red fruit core is pure and vibrant, framed by mineral tension and fresh acidity rather than sheer weight. Hints of herbs, licorice and smoke linger on a long, harmonious finish. While already delicious and approachable, this Cornas has the structure to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
Cornas Vieilles Vignes is sourced from old-vine Syrah planted on the steep, terraced granite slopes that define Cornas in the northern Rhône. These low-yielding vines, often worked by hand due to the incline, dig deep into the fractured granite and decomposed rock, giving the wine its distinctive mineral backbone and intensity. Harvest is typically done by hand in small crates to protect the fruit, with careful sorting to retain only the healthiest, ripest grapes. In the cellar, traditional northern Rhône methods prevail: fermentation with a proportion of whole clusters, native yeasts where possible, and gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse. The wine is then aged in oak—often largely used barrels rather than new—to allow the terroir and old-vine character to shine without overt wood influence.

Food & Serving
This Cornas is a superb partner for hearty, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef or venison, duck with black olives, or rustic game stews. It also pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, charcuterie, hard cheeses like aged Comté, and dishes featuring mushrooms or lentils. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it ages, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
