Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Vieilles Vignes is deeply colored, almost opaque, with a dark ruby to purple core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose opens slowly at first, still somewhat reserved, then reveals layers of cedar wood, dark berries, black cherries and wild herbs, with a touch of smoked meat and graphite as it unfurls in the glass. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably silky in texture, with ripe, dense fruit wrapped in polished tannins. Flavors of mixed black and red berries, plum and blackcurrant are lifted by notes of spice, cedar and a subtle savory undertone. The finish is long, precise and surprisingly vibrant, driven by fresh, almost incisive acidity that gives tension and length. Still a little closed in its youth, this 2017 has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over the next 10–20 years in magnum, gaining greater complexity and softness with time.

Production
Cornas Vieilles Vignes is drawn from old Syrah vines rooted in the classic decomposed granite of Cornas, on steep, terraced slopes that provide superb drainage and expose the vines to ample sun while preserving freshness from cool Rhône breezes. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, and all grapes are harvested by hand due to the demanding terrain. After a rigorous sorting, the fruit is traditionally vinified, with a high proportion of whole bunches depending on the vintage, and a long maceration to extract color, flavor and structure. The wine is then aged in French oak, largely older barrels and demi-muids, for roughly 18–24 months, allowing it to harmonize and gain complexity without being dominated by new wood before bottling in June 2019.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Cornas is a natural partner for robust, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, roast venison, grilled ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or earthy stews with mushrooms and root vegetables. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In magnum and at this stage of its life, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its full spectrum of aromas and flavors.
