Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Cornas Vieilles Vignes shows a dense, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its intensity. The nose opens slowly at first, with a reserved, almost closed character—cedar wood, crushed blackberries and dark cherries, then emerging notes of black pepper, violets, smoked meat and a touch of graphite as it takes on air. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet surprisingly refined, with a silken texture that glides across the mouth. Ripe mixed-berry fruit—blackcurrant, blackberry and plum—is framed by cedar, subtle spice and savoury mineral notes. The structure is driven by vibrant, almost unexpectedly brisk acidity that gives the long finish a firm, crisp, mouthwatering edge. Tannins are fine but present, promising excellent development in bottle. While already impressive with proper aeration, this 2017 has the depth and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Cornas Vieilles Vignes is drawn from old Syrah vines planted on the steep, terraced granitic slopes of Cornas in France’s northern Rhône—one of the appellation’s great terroirs for structured, age-worthy reds. Vines are typically worked by hand due to the gradient, with careful, low-yielding viticulture to maximise concentration and purity of fruit. Harvesting is done by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used. In the cellar, Alain Voge favours a traditional approach to Cornas: gentle extraction to capture depth without harshness, followed by aging in carefully selected barrels to integrate tannins and add subtle layers of cedar and spice without overshadowing the granitic character and vibrant acidity of the wine.

Food & Serving
This Cornas is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes—think slow-braised lamb shank, ribeye steak, duck confit, game birds, venison stews or roasted wild mushrooms with herbs. It also works beautifully with hearty casseroles, charcuterie, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to let the aromatics fully express themselves. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended to help the wine open up from its initially reserved state; as it matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will be sufficient.
