Description
Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Fontaines 2016 is a benchmark Northern Rhône Syrah from one of Cornas’ most revered traditionalists. Sourced from some of the oldest vines in the appellation, this cuvée marries raw power with remarkable precision and finesse. The 2016 has now settled beautifully in bottle, revealing a wine that is both muscular and elegantly polished, with an unmistakable sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Vieilles Fontaines is deep, opaque ruby with a dark, almost inky core and a subtle purple rim. The nose opens with intense aromas of ripe blackberry and black plum, layered with cedar, cracked black pepper, dried violets, and a pronounced mineral streak reminiscent of crushed granite and warm stone. With air, hints of smoked meat, licorice, and subtle spice emerge, adding complexity and depth.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, concentrated Cornas that remains beautifully poised. Dense, dark fruit—brombeers and plums—coats the mouth, supported by vibrant acidity and finely woven, ripe tannins. The cedar note from élevage is already well-integrated, framing the fruit rather than dominating it. The granite-driven minerality carries through to a long, savoury finish, where juicy black fruit, spice and soft, velvety tannins linger. While already highly enjoyable, this vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 12–20 years, developing more gamey, truffley nuances over time.
Production
Vieilles Fontaines is drawn from Alain Voge’s oldest Syrah vines in Cornas, rooted in steep, terraced slopes of decomposed granite that give the wine its signature power and mineral backbone. The vineyards are farmed by hand—out of necessity on the dramatic inclines—and under an organic/biodynamic philosophy, ensuring low yields and exceptional concentration. Harvest is done manually, parcel by parcel, ensuring only perfectly ripe clusters make it to the cellar. Vinification typically involves whole or partial whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a restrained proportion of new oak) to polish the tannins without masking the terroir. The result is a Cornas of great intensity, precision and typicity.
Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for richly flavoured dishes such as slow-braised lamb shank, beef short ribs, confit duck leg or venison stew, as well as grilled ribeye, game birds and rustic dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils or black olives. Mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or Beaufort also work brilliantly with its savoury depth. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended at this stage to allow the cedar, dark fruit and granite notes to fully unfurl, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
The late Alain Voge was instrumental in reviving Cornas’ reputation, championing its steep granite slopes at a time when many growers abandoned them for easier land. From the 1960s onward, he focused on bottling estate wines and expressing the character of individual parcels, helping to reposition Cornas as one of the great sources of Syrah in the Northern Rhône. Today, the domaine continues under the same quality-driven, terroir-focused philosophy, farming organically and often biodynamically. Cuvées like Vieilles Fontaines, drawn from the domaine’s oldest vines, have earned international acclaim and are now considered reference-point Cornas, regularly cited among the appellation’s most distinguished and ageworthy wines.
