Description
Alain Geoffroy Chablis 1er Cru Vau Ligneau 2022 is a finely etched Premier Cru Chardonnay from one of Chablis’ most historic family estates. Rooted in tradition since 1850, the wine captures the crisp mineral identity of Chablis while showing the extra depth and refinement that define a top Premier Cru site.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, this Chablis Premier Cru is bright and luminous, with a clean, precise profile. The nose opens with white flowers, citrus zest, green apple, and a distinct chalky, oyster-shell character, layered with subtle stone fruit and a gentle creamy nuance from lees aging.
On the palate, it is both structured and graceful, combining tension, freshness, and a rounded texture. The Kimmeridgian soils bring a vivid saline minerality and length, while the Chardonnay offers purity and elegance. It can be enjoyed now for its freshness, but it also has the balance and concentration to age beautifully over the next 5 to 8 years, developing greater complexity with time.
Production
Vau Ligneau comes from Premier Cru vineyards situated between the villages of Beine and La Chapelle Vaupelteigne, where Chardonnay is grown on rich Kimmeridgian marl and fossil-rich limestone soils. These porous soils encourage deep rooting and contribute to the wine’s intense mineral expression and aromatic complexity.
After pressing, the juice is settled in stainless steel tanks for 24 hours before undergoing alcoholic fermentation, which continues into winter and is followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in tank on its fine lees for several months, a method that enhances texture, preserves freshness, and builds complexity without masking the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for oysters, shellfish, grilled white fish, sushi, roast chicken, and creamy seafood dishes. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese and lightly seasoned dishes that allow its mineral edge to shine. Serve chilled at 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help the wine open up in its youth.
