Description
Agri Segretum Pottarello Bio 2020 is an organically farmed Umbrian red that delivers depth, character and a distinctly regional personality. Named after the local dialect word for “little child”, this wine is anything but shy, offering generous structure and intensity wrapped in a surprisingly agile, drinkable style. Crafted from Sangiovese with Malvasia Nera and Colorino, Pottarello is a modern interpretation of central Italy’s classic grapes with a strong sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pottarello Bio 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet nuances at the rim, hinting at concentration and structure. The nose opens with dark red berry fruit—think black cherry, wild raspberry and cooked plum—layered with notes of dried violets, tobacco leaf, leather and a subtle graphite minerality. Hints of earth and dried herbs add complexity and a distinctly Umbrian rustic charm.
On the palate, the wine is surprisingly lithe and juicy given its power, with a fresh, savoury spine that keeps the generous fruit in balance. Ripe red and black berries are framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively acidity, leading into flavours of spiced plum, cocoa, leather and a touch of dried rose. The finish is long and savoury, with earthy and mineral notes lingering. Well-structured yet approachable, this vintage has the backbone to age gracefully for 6–10 years from release, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and sweet spice over time.
Production
Pottarello Bio is rooted in the rolling hills of Umbria, where clay- and limestone-rich soils, warm days and cool nights help Sangiovese and its local partners develop both ripeness and freshness. The vineyards are farmed organically, and the grapes are hand-harvested to ensure only the healthiest, best-ripened bunches make it to the cellar. After picking, the fruit is destemmed and undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless-steel tanks, with an extended maceration of around three weeks to extract colour, aroma and structure. The wine is then aged for about 12 months in 500-litre oak barrels, a format that softens tannins and adds subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit, before a further rest in bottle prior to release.
Food & Serving
This Umbrian red is a natural match for robust, flavourful cuisine—think grilled lamb chops, bistecca alla fiorentina, hearty ragùs, wild boar, braised beef or oven-roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, hard cow’s milk cheeses and truffle-inflected dishes from central Italy. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight its balance of fruit and savoury notes. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to relax.
Producer
Agri Segretum is a small, quality-focused estate in Umbria that has quickly earned a reputation for characterful, honest wines with a strong sense of terroir. Working organically and with a hands-on approach from vineyard to bottle, the winery champions local varieties such as Sangiovese, Colorino and Malvasia Nera, crafting wines that reflect the region’s rustic elegance rather than chasing international trends. Pottarello has become one of the estate’s flagship bottlings, showcasing how careful farming, low-intervention cellar work and thoughtful oak use can elevate traditional Umbrian grapes into distinctive, premium wines sought after by enthusiasts looking beyond the more famous Tuscan appellations.
