Description
Agri Segretum Marmocchio Bio 2018 is a powerful, organically certified red from the rolling hills of Umbria, crafted in very limited quantities and only in outstanding vintages. This DOC Todi wine marries Sangiovese Grosso with the region’s emblematic Sagrantino, delivering depth, structure and a distinctly Umbrian character. Named “Marmocchio” – Italian slang for a cheeky kid – it’s a playful name for a seriously grown‑up wine with real aging potential and complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Marmocchio Bio 2018 shows a deep, intense ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its maturity and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe black cherry, sour cherry and plum are interwoven with dried violet, wild herbs, tobacco leaf and subtle balsamic notes. As it opens, you’ll find nuances of dark chocolate, sweet spice, cedar and a touch of leather from its long élevage in large French oak.
On the palate, this is a full‑bodied, richly textured wine with a firm backbone. The Sangiovese brings vibrant acidity and juicy red fruit, while the Sagrantino contributes robust tannins and dark, brooding fruit notes. Flavours of cherry compote, blackberry and blackcurrant are joined by licorice, espresso and earthy, almost smoky undertones. The finish is long and savoury, with grippy yet polished tannins and a lingering echo of spice and dried herbs. Thanks to its concentration, structure and extended maturation before release, Marmocchio 2018 has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried fruit.
Production
Agri Segretum’s vineyards lie in the Todi area of Umbria’s Perugia province, on gently sloping hills with a mix of clay and limestone soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavour. Farmed organically, the vines are tended by hand, with careful green harvesting and selective picking to ensure only perfectly ripe Sangiovese Grosso (around 85%) and Sagrantino (about 15%) make it into Marmocchio. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts, followed by an extended maceration to extract colour, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for roughly 18–24 months in large French oak vessels of 500–1,500 litres, which provide micro‑oxygenation without overwhelming the fruit. After oak maturation, it rests for a further four years partly in tank and partly in bottle before release, allowing the powerful structure to integrate and the wine to gain remarkable harmony and depth.
Food & Serving
Marmocchio Bio 2018 is a natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes, especially those with an Umbrian or broader Italian rustic touch. Think slow‑braised lamb shanks, ossobuco, wild boar ragù, grilled bistecca alla fiorentina, or hearty stews with game and porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, and truffle‑accented dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if the wine is too warm, its alcohol can feel more prominent. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, particularly in its youth, to soften the firm Sagrantino tannins and allow the complex aromatics to fully unfold.
Producer
Agri Segretum is a small, quality‑driven estate in Umbria, founded by Lorenzo de Monaco with a clear focus on organic viticulture and characterful, terroir‑driven wines. The winery takes its name from the idea of a “secret field,” reflecting both the quiet beauty of its hillside vineyards near Todi and a philosophy rooted in respect for nature and tradition. By working with classic regional varieties like Sangiovese and Sagrantino and fermenting with native yeasts, Agri Segretum has become known for wines that are authentic expressions of their origin, combining intensity with finesse. The Marmocchio label, produced only in excellent years, stands as one of the estate’s flagship bottlings and has helped cement its reputation as a rising star in the Umbrian wine scene.
