Description

Agnanum Piedirosso Sabbia Vulcanica is a characterful red from the volcanic hillsides just outside Naples, capturing the wild, saline charm of Campania’s coast. Crafted from the native Piedirosso grape, this non-vintage cuvée showcases the energy of vines rooted in pure volcanic sand. It’s a wine for those who appreciate authenticity, mineral finesse and a strong sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Piedirosso Sabbia Vulcanica typically shows a luminous ruby hue with garnet highlights at the rim, lighter in color than many southern Italian reds yet remarkably vivid. The nose is perfumed and expressive, with notes of wild red cherry, pomegranate, dried herbs and rose petals, intertwined with hints of smoke, iron, ash and Mediterranean scrub that clearly speak of volcanic soils. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and vibrant, led by juicy red fruit, blood orange and a subtle savory edge—think dried tomato, black pepper and a gentle earthiness. Fine-grained tannins and lively acidity keep it fresh and mouthwatering, while a distinct saline-mineral streak runs through the finish, making each sip feel precise and energetic rather than heavy. Enjoyed in its youth for maximum aromatic lift and tension, it can also evolve gracefully over a few years, gaining more complexity and a deeper, spicy earth tone.

Production
Sourced from vineyards planted on the steep, sandy volcanic slopes of Campi Flegrei in Campania, this Piedirosso grows in incredibly poor, ash-rich soils with excellent drainage and strong maritime influence. The vines are typically tended by hand on these challenging terrains, with low yields that concentrate flavor and preserve natural acidity. Harvest is done manually to ensure optimal ripeness and careful bunch selection, often from old, partially ungrafted vines that predate phylloxera. In the cellar, Agnanum follows a low-intervention philosophy: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction and aging in neutral vessels (such as cement or older barrels) to highlight purity of fruit and terroir, rather than oak. Minimal handling and restrained use of sulfur help retain the vivid, volcanic character in the finished wine.

Food & Serving
This wine is a natural partner for classic Neapolitan cuisine and other Mediterranean dishes. Try it with pizza Margherita or pizza with anchovies, tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled sausages, roasted poultry, lamb chops with herbs, or simply charcuterie and semi-aged cheeses. Its acidity and saline edge also work beautifully with dishes featuring tomatoes, olives and capers. Serve at around 15–17°C (59–63°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic detail. A brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up, especially if enjoyed on the younger side, but extended decanting is not necessary.

Producer
Agnanum is a small, quality-driven estate perched in the volcanic amphitheatre of Campi Flegrei, just inland from the Bay of Naples in Campania. Working primarily with local varieties like Piedirosso and Falanghina, the winery has become one of the benchmarks for authentic, terroir-focused wines from this dramatic coastal region. Often farming old, sometimes ungrafted vines on steep, sandy volcanic slopes, Agnanum champions traditional, low-intervention practices and minimal cellar manipulation. Their bottlings are celebrated by enthusiasts and critics alike for capturing the tension, salinity and smoky minerality that make the wines of Campi Flegrei so distinctive, helping to raise the profile of this historic yet still relatively under-the-radar appellation.
