Description

Adega do Vulcão Ameixâmbar Branco is a striking white from the remote Azores, a volcanic archipelago set in the middle of the North Atlantic. This cuvée showcases the islands’ singular character through a blend of Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, two rare native grapes that thrive in windswept, basalt-rich vineyards. Named “Ameixâmbar” – a play on “amber plum” – it alludes both to the golden hue of the fully ripe grapes and the stone-fruit nuances that define the wine’s profile.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ameixâmbar Branco shows a pale straw to light golden color, with a subtle greenish glint that hints at its Atlantic freshness. The nose is vivid and saline, offering aromas of white plum, apricot skin and citrus zest, overlaid with notes of sea spray, crushed shells and a gentle smokiness from the volcanic soils. Hints of fennel, lime blossom and wet stone add further complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, it is taut, linear and intensely mineral, with a mouthwatering acidity that frames flavors of ripe stone fruit, green apple, Meyer lemon and a delicate herbal edge. The texture is refined yet slightly creamy from time on the lees, giving weight without sacrificing precision or lift. The finish is long, salty and focused, leaving a lingering impression of citrus peel and chalky, volcanic minerality. With its vibrant structure and concentration, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for 5–7 years, gaining more savory, saline and nutty nuances over time.

Production
The grapes for Ameixâmbar Branco are sourced from low-yielding vineyards rooted in pure volcanic basalt, often planted in traditional stone-walled plots that shield the vines from fierce Atlantic winds and sea salt. The cool, oceanic climate, marked by strong maritime breezes and wide diurnal ranges, preserves acidity and aromatic intensity in both Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico. The fruit is carefully hand-harvested in small crates to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine condition. After gentle pressing, the must is typically fermented at controlled temperatures, predominantly in stainless steel to capture freshness and terroir transparency, with a portion of the wine resting on fine lees for several months. Occasional bâtonnage adds texture and complexity, while the overall vinification remains low-intervention to let the volcanic origin and indigenous varieties speak clearly in the glass.

Food & Serving
Ameixâmbar Branco is a natural partner for seafood and dishes that highlight purity and freshness. Think simply grilled fish with lemon and herbs, octopus salad, razor clams, ceviche, oysters or sushi and sashimi; it also works beautifully with lightly smoked fish, goat cheese, and vegetable dishes featuring fennel, citrus or fresh herbs. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its tension and salinity. A brief 15–20 minutes in the glass, or a short decant for younger bottles, helps the wine unfold its stone-fruit, floral and mineral layers without muting its racy Atlantic edge.

Producer
Adega do Vulcão is a boutique producer dedicated to expressing the raw, volcanic soul of the Azores through small-lot wines crafted from the archipelago’s historic native varieties. Working with vines planted on basalt-rich soils just steps from the Atlantic, the estate focuses on low-yield, high-character parcels that reflect the islands’ unique combination of oceanic climate and volcanic geology. In a region where viticulture has long been defined by resilience and ingenuity, Adega do Vulcão has emerged as one of the key names showcasing the modern potential of Azorean wines – championing indigenous grapes like Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, and earning growing recognition among sommeliers and enthusiasts seeking authentic, Atlantic-driven whites with a strong sense of place.
