Description

Adega do Vulcão Ameixâmbar Branco is a striking Atlantic white from the remote volcanic islands of the Azores, some 1,700 km west of mainland Portugal. Crafted from the rare native grapes Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, it captures the tension between oceanic freshness and deep, basalt-driven minerality. The name “Ameixâmbar” – a play on “ameixa” (plum) and “âmbar” (amber) – nods both to the golden hue of the ripe grapes and the subtle stone-fruit profile in the glass, while honoring the Azores’ long, if little-known, winemaking heritage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ameixâmbar Branco typically shows a luminous pale straw to light gold color, often with a faint green rim that hints at its freshness. The nose is precise and saline, with aromas of lemon zest, green plum and white peach layered over crushed seashells, wet volcanic stone and a gentle herbal note reminiscent of fennel fronds or sea herbs. On the palate, this is a taut, linear white with vibrant acidity and a distinctly Atlantic character. Flavors of lime, underripe apricot and golden plum are framed by a firm mineral backbone and a mouthwatering, almost salty edge. The texture is fine and tense rather than broad, with a long, subtly smoky finish that speaks clearly of volcanic soils. Enjoy it in its youth for maximum energy and purity, but well-stored bottles have the structure and acidity to develop added complexity – more honeyed, nutty and tertiary notes – over the next 5–7 years.

Production
The vineyards for Ameixâmbar Branco are rooted in the Azores’ dramatic volcanic terroir, where low-trained vines are often sheltered by stone walls and grow directly in fractured lava and ash-rich soils just above the Atlantic. The strong ocean influence brings cool breezes, significant humidity and moderate temperatures, preserving acidity and slowing ripening. Arinto dos Açores, which makes up the core of the blend, is sourced from ash and lava-based plots that impart its electric mineral profile, while a smaller proportion of Terrantez do Pico contributes aromatic nuance and texture. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to preserve fruit integrity, then carefully sorted. Vinification is focused on purity: gentle pressing, cool fermentation (largely in stainless steel) and aging on fine lees help enhance texture and complexity without masking the natural character of the varieties or their volcanic origin.

Food & Serving
Ameixâmbar Branco is a natural partner for seafood and dishes that echo its Atlantic and mineral personality. Think simply grilled fish, octopus, razor clams, oysters, ceviche, or tuna tartare, as well as lightly spiced shellfish pastas and sushi. It also works beautifully with salty cheeses, tempura vegetables, and dishes featuring fresh herbs, citrus, or fennel. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to emphasize its precision and saline edge. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a larger glass and giving it a few minutes in the air will allow the stone-fruit and smoky mineral notes to unfurl.

Producer
Adega do Vulcão is a boutique producer dedicated to reviving and showcasing the singular volcanic terroirs of the Azores, an archipelago with a winemaking history that stretches back to the 15th century. Working primarily with native varieties such as Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, the estate focuses on low-intervention viticulture and small-lot, terroir-driven wines that express the islands’ lava soils and wild Atlantic climate. In a region once better known for fortified wines and nearly lost to phylloxera and abandonment, Adega do Vulcão has become one of the modern standard-bearers for Azorean wine, helping to put these remote Atlantic vineyards back on the map among sommeliers and wine lovers seeking distinctive, mineral-rich whites.
