Description

AdamsWein Viognier vinocentral UNIKAT 2022 is a characterful German take on a Rhône classic, crafted in tiny quantities exclusively for vinocentral’s UNIKAT series. Sourced from mature Viognier vines on the Ingelheimer Sonnenhang in Rheinhessen, this white wine combines southern charm with a distinctly cool-climate precision. It’s a singular bottling that showcases just how expressive and long-lived Viognier can be on German soil.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Viognier presents a bright, medium golden color with subtle, viscous legs hinting at concentration and ripeness. The nose is inviting and generous, with aromas of red and yellow peaches, apricot, white blossom, and a touch of honeysuckle, supported by hints of citrus zest, fresh herbs, and a delicate mineral underpinning. On the palate, the wine is dry, layered, and textured, balancing Viognier’s natural richness with lively, Rheinhessen acidity. Juicy stone-fruit flavors—ripe peach and apricot—are joined by notes of melon, subtle spice, and floral tones, leading into a long, elegant finish with a gentle phenolic grip that gives structure without heaviness. This is a Viognier that drinks beautifully in its youth for its aromatic intensity, yet it has the balance and extract to develop for 5–8 years in bottle, gaining more honeyed, nutty and savory complexity over time.

Production
The fruit for this UNIKAT bottling comes from the Ingelheimer Sonnenhang, a sun-exposed slope in Rheinhessen where Simone Adams’ father planted Viognier vines back in 2004, long before the variety was fashionable in Germany. The site’s warm exposition and well-drained soils allow the late-ripening Viognier to achieve full aromatic maturity while cool nights help preserve freshness and acidity. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe bunches make it into the cellar. In keeping with AdamsWein’s quality-driven, artisan approach, the must is handled gently, often with a period of skin contact to enhance texture and aromatic complexity, then slowly fermented—typically with minimal intervention—in stainless steel and/or neutral vessels. Extended lees contact adds depth and mouthfeel while preserving the varietal purity and tension that define this cuvée.

Food & Serving
This Viognier is an ideal partner for aromatic, subtly spiced cuisine and refined dishes that benefit from both fragrance and structure. Try it with grilled sea bass or turbot, scallops, shellfish, or richer poultry dishes such as roast chicken with herbs, guinea fowl, or veal in a light cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with Asian-inspired dishes that feature ginger, lemongrass, or mild curry, as well as soft cheeses like Brie, Camembert, or a young washed-rind cheese. Serve at about 10–12°C (50–54°F) to let the aromatics fully unfurl without losing freshness. A short decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium-sized white wine carafe can further open up the bouquet and refine the texture, especially if serving the wine on the cooler side or in its youth.

Producer
AdamsWein is the personal project of Simone Adams in Ingelheim, Rheinhessen, where she has emerged as one of the region’s most thoughtful and terroir-focused producers. Working largely with organically farmed vineyards on the Ingelheimer hillsides, she has become particularly known for her precise, site-expressive wines and for championing varieties and styles that highlight Rheinhessen’s diversity. The collaboration with vinocentral on the UNIKAT series, including this long-running Viognier bottling—originally released under the name Kaliber 17—has taken on a near-legendary status among insiders, demonstrating the potential of Viognier in Germany. AdamsWein’s work has helped reposition Ingelheim from a quiet, traditional area to a source of some of the country’s most interesting and characterful wines.
