Description

AdamsWein Spätburgunder *seit 1882* Versteigerung 2022 is a rare, auction-only Pinot Noir from Rheinhessen, crafted by Simone Adams in micro-quantities for the Bernkasteler Ring. Named in tribute to the founding year of the estate, this cuvée brings together the finest barrels from her top limestone vineyards. It’s a wine that marries precision and depth, designed for collectors and Pinot Noir lovers who appreciate elegance, structure, and long aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätburgunder shows a luminous, transparent ruby core with bright garnet reflections, hinting at both concentration and finesse. At first opening, the nose is deliberately restrained and almost shy, with dark, cool-toned fruit—think black cherry skin, wild plum and bramble—wrapped in subtle, earthy spice and a whisper of dried herbs and graphite. With air, the wine slowly unfolds, revealing a brighter, more charming side: wild raspberry, redcurrant and crushed strawberry layered with rose petals, fine tea leaves, and a touch of sweet baking spice from its time in barrel. On the palate, it is taut and finely etched rather than opulent—silky yet firmly structured tannins, a linear, limestone-driven acidity, and a long, salty-mineral finish. The whole-cluster fermentation brings a delicate stemmy spice and gentle grip, adding verticality and complexity rather than rusticity. Still youthful and somewhat reserved, this 2022 has the bones to evolve beautifully over the next 8–15 years, gaining in aromatic detail, suppleness, and tertiary nuances of sous-bois and truffle with proper cellaring.

Production
The grapes for Spätburgunder *seit 1882* are sourced from Simone Adams’ top sites around Ingelheim in Rheinhessen, all marked by limestone-rich soils that lend lift, tension, and a distinctive mineral backbone to the wine. Yields are kept low, and harvesting is done by hand, with strict berry selection to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit makes it into the cuvée. As is Simone Adams’ hallmark style, the Pinot Noir is fermented 100% with whole clusters, including stems, when the vintage conditions allow—enhancing aromatic complexity, tannin finesse, and ageworthiness. Gentle extraction, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and a careful élevage in small oak barrels (a measured proportion of which is new) allow the individual lots from various top parcels to express themselves. Only the most promising barrels are chosen and blended to create this auction bottling, which is then bottled with minimal intervention to preserve purity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This refined, structured Spätburgunder is an excellent match for elegant, savory dishes rather than heavy, sauced cuisine. Think roast duck breast with thyme and cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal tenderloin, or perfectly cooked poultry such as guinea fowl. Earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, truffled potato purée, root vegetables, or dishes featuring lentils and roasted beet—will echo the wine’s subtle spice and future forest-floor notes. Serve at 14–16 °C in large Burgundy stems to allow the aromatics to unfold. Because the wine opens slowly, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended in its youth, especially if opened within the first 5–8 years after the vintage.

Producer
AdamsWein, led by winemaker Simone Adams, is based in Ingelheim in Rheinhessen, a town historically celebrated for its Spätburgunder and often called the “Red Wine Town” of the region. The name *seit 1882* pays homage to the founding of the family estate, underlining the deep roots and continuity behind this otherwise modern, terroir-focused project. Over the past years, Simone has become one of the most closely watched Pinot Noir specialists in Germany, recognized for her meticulous vineyard work, emphasis on limestone sites, and her confident use of whole-cluster fermentation. Her invitation to offer this Spätburgunder at the prestigious Bernkasteler Ring auction underscores not only the rising stature of AdamsWein but also the growing reputation of Rheinhessen as a serious address for world-class Pinot Noir.
