Description

AdamsWein Spätburgunder seit 1882 2023 Magnum – Versteigerung is a rare, large-format bottling from one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting Pinot Noir specialists. Created especially for auction, this cuvée brings together the finest Spätburgunder barrels of the vintage in a single, collector-worthy wine. Named “seit 1882” in homage to the founding year of the estate, it captures both tradition and the contemporary finesse that has made Simone Adams a reference for German Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Spätburgunder seit 1882 presents a radiant, translucent ruby to garnet hue typical of finely crafted Pinot Noir, with an almost weightless appearance that hints at elegance rather than power. Initially, the nose can be quite reserved when freshly opened, showing dark-toned red fruits—think black cherry, wild raspberry, and redcurrant—layered with subtle floral notes of rose petal and violet. Underneath lies a fine, chalky-mineral impression and a discreet, savory spice, reflecting both whole-cluster fermentation and limestone terroir. On the palate, the wine is precise and tightly woven, with cool, red-fruited purity and a clear, linear structure. Crunchy cherry and cranberry are framed by notes of dried herbs, white pepper, and a gentle, stem-derived spice that adds complexity without heaviness. Tannins are ultra-fine yet firm enough to provide grip, supported by fresh, mouthwatering acidity that stretches the finish and underlines the wine’s mineral core. In magnum format, this Spätburgunder is built for patience: while already fascinating with sufficient aeration, it should gain in aromatic detail, silkiness, and depth over the next 8–15 years, and likely beyond in optimal cellaring conditions.

Production
The fruit for Spätburgunder seit 1882 comes from Simone Adams’ top, limestone-rich vineyards around Ingelheim in Rheinhessen, a historic Pinot stronghold where calcareous soils and a relatively cool climate naturally favor finesse and tension. Only the very best barrels from these premium parcels are selected for this cuvée, effectively creating a pinnacle blend of the estate’s Spätburgunder holdings in the given vintage. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and sorted for perfect health. As is Simone Adams’ hallmark when the fruit quality allows, the wine is fermented 100% with whole clusters, including stems, to enhance aromatic lift, structure, and complexity. Gentle extraction during fermentation preserves the delicacy of Pinot Noir, and the wine is then matured in carefully chosen barrels (often with a thoughtful use of oak) until the most refined casks are identified and blended. The magnum bottling adds an extra dimension of aging potential and refinement.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a versatile, gastronomic red that shines alongside refined yet characterful dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (particularly duck or guinea fowl), veal, pork tenderloin, and game birds; mushroom-based dishes, truffled pasta, and beetroot or root-vegetable preparations also echo its earthy and mineral nuances. Lighter lamb dishes and mildly seasoned charcuterie can be excellent partners as well. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 14–16 °C (57–61 °F). Given its initially reserved nature, especially in youth, decanting is strongly recommended: allow 1–2 hours in a carafe for the wine to unfurl its brighter, more charming side and reveal the full spectrum of fruit, spice, and floral detail.

Producer
AdamsWein is the personal project of winemaker Simone Adams in Ingelheim, Rheinhessen, where Spätburgunder has a long and storied history. Though the label reflects a modern, terroir-driven philosophy, the name “seit 1882” recalls the roots of the family estate, tying contemporary craftsmanship to more than a century of viticultural tradition. Simone Adams is widely regarded as one of the leading new voices in German Pinot Noir, noted for her sensitive work in the vineyard, focus on limestone parcels, and frequent use of whole-cluster fermentation to capture precision and energy. Her participation in prestigious auctions such as the Bernkasteler Ring underscores the estate’s growing stature, placing AdamsWein among the most sought-after addresses for serious Spätburgunder in Rheinhessen and beyond.
