Description
AdamsWein Frühburgunder Lohpfad 2020 shines a spotlight on one of Germany’s most intriguing insider grapes: Frühburgunder, the earlier-ripening, small-berried sibling of Pinot Noir. In the hands of Dr. Simone Adams, this rare variety delivers a wine that is every bit as refined and complex as top Burgundy, yet distinctly Rheinhessen in character. The Lohpfad 2020 combines precise fruit, fine-boned structure and a striking sense of place, making it a standout choice for lovers of elegant, terroir-driven reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Lohpfad 2020 shows a translucent, medium ruby hue with a gentle brightness that hints at its finesse-driven style. The nose is vivid and precise: red berry fruits such as redcurrant and wild strawberry mingle with a touch of cassis, delicate herbal notes and a whisper of light tobacco. Underneath lies a subtle, complex spice profile reminiscent of an old spice cabinet – think clove, allspice and a hint of dried flowers.
On the palate, the wine is slender and taut in the best possible way, recalling a fine Pinot Noir from Burgundy. The fruit is crystal-clear and pure, carried by a refined, filigree spice and a refreshing backbone of acidity. Tannins are fine-grained and elegantly structured, giving the wine both tension and length without any heaviness. This Frühburgunder already drinks beautifully in its youth, but its balance of acidity, fruit intensity and structure suggests a solid aging potential of 5–8 years, during which it will gain even more aromatic depth and textural nuance.
Production
The Lohpfad vineyard lies in Rheinhessen, an area where varied soils and a relatively mild climate give Frühburgunder the conditions it needs to ripen early while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. Dr. Simone Adams is known for a meticulous, terroir-focused approach; the grapes for this wine are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to safeguard the fragile skins and maintain purity of fruit. In the cellar, gentle handling and a thoughtful, low-intervention vinification allow Frühburgunder’s delicacy to shine: careful sorting, controlled fermentation and sensitive use of oak (often with a significant proportion of used barrels rather than new) help to frame the wine’s bright berry character, herbal nuances and fine, linear structure without overwhelming them.
Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile food wine that thrives alongside dishes of similar elegance and restraint. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (especially duck or guinea fowl), veal, pork tenderloin, rabbit, or earthy vegetarian plates featuring mushrooms, root vegetables or lentils. Delicate game birds, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses such as Tomme, Reblochon or a mild washed-rind cheese also work wonderfully with its red fruit and subtle spice. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing additional layers of spice, herb and tobacco.
Producer
AdamsWein is the project of Dr. Simone Adams, one of the most exciting young winemakers in Rheinhessen, with a particular reputation for her work with Pinot varieties and site-driven, finely structured reds. From her base around Ingelheim, an area historically known for Spätburgunder, she has turned Frühburgunder into a calling card, showcasing just how serious and ageworthy this lesser-known grape can be. Her vineyards are farmed with great care and a strong focus on soil health and biodiversity, and her cellar work is equally thoughtful and restrained, emphasizing transparency of terroir. Within the region, AdamsWein is seen as part of a new, quality-obsessed generation of growers, and wines like the Frühburgunder Lohpfad 2020 have helped cement her reputation among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts looking for German reds with true finesse and character.
