Description
A. Christmann Spätburgunder Mussbacher Eselshaut Erste Lage Bio 2022 is a refined, organically farmed Pinot Noir from one of the Pfalz region’s most respected estates. Sourced from the classified Erste Lage site Mussbacher Eselshaut, this wine balances concentration with finesse, showcasing Spätburgunder in a cool, elegant style. The combination of certified organic farming and a historic sandstone terroir gives this cuvée both precision and depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, translucent ruby hue, typical of fine Pinot Noir from a cooler site. The nose is expressive yet poised, with aromas of red cherry, wild raspberry and redcurrant, layered with rose petals, subtle baking spice, and a hint of crushed sandstone and dried herbs.
On the palate, it is elegant and compact, with very good concentration and a clear, linear structure. Juicy red berry fruit is wrapped in fine, silky tannins and lifted by a delicate, refreshing acidity that keeps everything precise and focused. Hints of cranberry, pomegranate, and a touch of spice and earth linger on the long, mineral-driven finish. Enjoyable now with a brief aeration, it has the balance and structure to develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years.
Production
Mussbacher Eselshaut is a south-east–facing Erste Lage vineyard at 155–165 meters above sea level, with around 10% slope and soils dominated by Buntsandsteingeröll (colored sandstone scree). This stony, well-draining terroir encourages deep rooting and naturally moderate yields, giving grapes with intensity and freshness. At Weingut A. Christmann, the Spätburgunder is farmed organically (and biodynamically in much of the estate), with careful, largely manual work in the vineyard and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the fruit is treated gently, typically with a proportion of whole berries or whole bunches depending on the vintage, followed by spontaneous fermentation and a patient élevage in predominantly used oak barrels to preserve purity of fruit and the signature mineral character of the site.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder pairs beautifully with refined dishes that echo its elegance and structure: roast chicken with herbs, duck breast, veal cutlets, pork tenderloin, or mushroom-based dishes such as wild mushroom risotto or truffle pasta. It also works well with charcuterie and mild, semi-soft cheeses. Serve at 14–16 °C, slightly cooler than room temperature, to highlight its aromatic lift and freshness. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more nuance and texture.
