Description
A refined single-vineyard Pinot Noir from one of the Pfalz’s most celebrated sites, A. Christmann’s Spätburgunder Königsbacher Ölberg Erste Lage Bio captures the precision, depth, and elegance that have made this estate a benchmark for the region. Sourced from the VDP Erste Lage Ölberg, just north of the famed Idig site, it combines the character of old vines with the aromatic lift of French Pinot Noir clones and biodynamic farming.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätburgunder shows a poised, dark-fruited profile with a clear, polished structure. Expect precise aromas of black cherry, wild berries, and subtle spice, layered with fine oak notes and a distinct mineral edge from the limestone marl soils.
On the palate, it is dense yet finely woven, with juicy dark berry fruit, savory spice, and a silky tannin frame that carries the wine long and straight. The finish is persistent and elegant, suggesting excellent aging potential over the next several years, where its complexity and detail should continue to unfold.
Production
The Ölberg vineyard in Königsbach sits at 140–220 meters above sea level on a gentle east-facing slope, with tertiary limestone marl and sandstone rubble in the topsoil providing a cool, mineral expression. The biodynamically farmed grapes are selectively harvested by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard and cellar; the fruit was predominantly destemmed and vinified to preserve purity, precision, and site character.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with duck breast, roast quail, venison, mushroom dishes, and refined poultry preparations. Serve at 15–17°C, and decant briefly if youthful to let the wine’s spice and aromatic detail open fully.
