Description

A. Christmann Spätburgunder Königsbacher Ölberg Erste Lage Bio 2021 is a finely etched, biodynamic Pinot Noir from one of Pfalz’s most distinguished limestone sites. Grown on the VDP-classified Erste Lage Ölberg in Königsbach, it combines dark-berry precision with striking spice and elegant structure. This is a wine that bridges classic Burgundy-inspired finesse with the depth and warmth of Germany’s modern Pinot renaissance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Königsbacher Ölberg Spätburgunder shows a translucent, vibrant ruby-red hue with a delicate rim, signalling both concentration and finesse. The nose opens with precise dark berry notes—think black cherry, blackberry and wild raspberry—wrapped in fine spice, hints of forest floor, dried rose petals and a touch of graphite. Subtle, well-judged oak brings whispers of cedar, cocoa and sweet baking spices without ever dominating. On the palate, the wine is densely woven yet remarkably poised. Juicy dark fruit is carried by a cool, linear acid spine and ultra-fine, chalky tannins that reflect its limestone-rich soils. Notes of black cherry, mulberry and wild berries intertwine with savoury spice, a touch of crushed herbs and a gentle smokiness from the delicate oak regime. The finish is long, precise and saline, with lingering mineral tension. 2021 is a fresh, structured vintage that will reward patience: enjoy now with a good decant, or cellar for 8–12 years to see more tertiary complexity—truffle, sous-bois and game—emerge over time.

Production
The Königsbacher Ölberg Erste Lage sits at 140–220 metres above sea level, facing east with a gentle 5% slope, allowing the vines to capture the morning sun while preserving freshness. The soils are dominated by tertiary limestone marl known locally as “Terra fusca”, mixed in the topsoil with sandstone scree, giving the wines both mineral drive and aromatic complexity. Christmann’s Spätburgunder vines here were planted in 1988 and in 2018 were partially grafted with select French Pinot Noir clones, marrying Burgundian aromatic density and spice with the finesse of the original old vines. Farmed biodynamically, the grapes are hand-harvested with strict selection in the vineyard. About 90% of the fruit is carefully destemmed, while 10% whole clusters are retained to add lift, structure and complexity. Fermentation takes place over roughly two weeks, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance rather than power, followed by élevage in oak (with subtle, restrained new wood) to refine texture and integrate the wine’s natural density.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is an excellent partner for refined dishes built around earthy, savoury flavours. Think roast duck breast with cherry jus, herb-crusted lamb, veal tenderloin, or game birds like pheasant and partridge. It also shines with mushroom-based plates—wild mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or roasted root vegetables—and soft to semi-hard cheeses such as Tomme, Comté or mild washed-rind varieties. Serve at 14–16°C in large Burgundy-style glasses to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the wine open up and knit together; older bottles (from 6+ years of age) will benefit from a gentler, shorter aeration.
