Description

A. Christmann Spätburgunder Idig Großes Gewächs Bio 2019 is a benchmark German Pinot Noir from one of the Pfalz region’s most revered vineyard sites. Crafted from organically grown grapes and classified as a Großes Gewächs, it marries Burgundian elegance with the precision and minerality that Idig is famous for. This is a serious, ageworthy red that showcases just how profound Spätburgunder from Germany can be.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, medium ruby color with a delicate translucence, hinting at finesse over sheer power. The nose is precise and layered: aromas of wild raspberry, red cherry and cranberry mingle with rose petals, fine spice, crushed stone, and a subtle, earthy undercurrent. Gentle notes of smoke, dried herbs, and a touch of fine oak add further complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this Idig Spätburgunder is concentrated yet remarkably fine-boned, with a cool, saline core. Juicy red berries and sour cherries are framed by vivid acidity and ultra-refined, chalky tannins. The signature of the terroir comes through in a pronounced minerality and a long, linear finish that feels almost salty, with lingering notes of spice, citrus zest, and stone. Still youthful in 2019, it has excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring, it should develop beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining more depth, earth, and savory complexity.

Production
The Idig vineyard is one of Pfalz’s most prized sites, a classified 6.53-hectare parcel facing south–south-east at 150–180 meters above sea level with a moderate 20% slope. The soils are dominated by tertiary limestone marl and the dark, clay-rich terra fusca, which together produce wines of density, tension, and pronounced minerality. Planted to both Riesling and Spätburgunder, the vineyard is farmed organically (Bio), with great emphasis on soil health and low yields to express the nuances of the terroir. Grapes are harvested selectively by hand at optimal ripeness, ensuring only the best bunches reach the cellar. Vinification typically follows a gentle, Burgundian-inspired approach: careful sorting, partial whole-berry or whole-bunch fermentation depending on the vintage, native yeasts where possible, and delicate extraction to preserve finesse. Maturation in fine-grained oak (predominantly used and a judicious portion of new barrels) allows the wine to integrate structure and complexity without masking its mineral-driven character.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder Idig Großes Gewächs is a versatile partner for refined cuisine, particularly dishes that highlight subtle flavors and fine textures. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, guinea fowl, veal, or pork tenderloin, as well as mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and earthy lentil or root-vegetable preparations. It also works well with mild, semi-soft cheeses like Reblochon, Tomme, or a gentle Brie. Serve at 14–16°C, ideally slightly cool to emphasize freshness and precision. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its aromatic complexity; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only briefly to remove sediment.

Producer
Weingut A. Christmann is one of the leading estates in the Pfalz and a standard-bearer for terroir-driven, organically farmed wines in Germany. Family-run for generations, the winery has steadily built a reputation for precision, elegance, and a deep commitment to expressing the character of its top sites, particularly premier and grand cru–level vineyards such as Idig. While Christmann is widely celebrated for its Rieslings, the estate’s Spätburgunder wines have become increasingly sought-after, showcasing a Burgundian level of finesse combined with distinctly Pfalz minerality. As a key member of the VDP (the German association of elite wine estates) and a pioneer in sustainable viticulture in the region, A. Christmann plays an important role in shaping the modern image of German fine wine on the international stage.
