Description

A. Christmann Spätburgunder Gimmeldinger Biengarten Erste Lage Bio 2020 is a finely etched, organically certified Pinot Noir from one of Pfalz’s most historic single vineyards. Sourced from the classified “Erste Lage” Biengarten site, this wine combines cool-climate precision with the generosity and charm that have made Christmann’s reds so sought after. Expect a poised, elegant style that speaks clearly of limestone soils and meticulous, low‑intervention winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Biengarten Spätburgunder shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a bright, limpid core that hints at its finesse-driven style. The nose is delicately expressive rather than showy: red cherries and wild strawberries interlace with pomegranate, rose petals, and a touch of blood orange zest, supported by fine notes of crushed stone, white pepper, and very subtle, well-integrated oak spice. On the palate, this is all about cool, “dancing” elegance: medium-bodied, silky, and linear, with a vivid spine of acidity that carries pure, bright cherry and red berry fruit. Fine, chalky tannins add gentle grip without heaviness, while nuances of herbal spice, tea leaf, and a hint of smoked wood emerge with air. The finish is long, precise, and mouthwatering, emphasizing minerality more than power. While already approachable with aeration, this vintage has the structure to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years from the harvest, gaining complexity and further harmony with time in bottle.

Production
The Gimmeldinger Biengarten is a 19.04-hectare classified Erste Lage on the slopes of the Haardt mountains in the Pfalz, facing east-southeast at 155–220 meters above sea level with around 10% incline. The site’s tertiary limestone marl (“Kalkmergel”) soils, combined with its terraced, hillside exposition, give excellent drainage, cool nights, and a long, even ripening period that suits Spätburgunder perfectly. Protected from cold western winds in spring, the vineyard has long been prized—historically even favored by local beekeepers, who could bring out their bees earlier here. In line with Christmann’s certified organic (and largely biodynamic) philosophy, grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and gently destemmed. Fermentation typically occurs with indigenous yeasts, with a proportion of whole berries or whole clusters depending on the year, followed by élevage in finely grained oak (largely used barrels) to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression, and minimal intervention before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a natural partner for refined, subtly flavored dishes: think roasted poultry (duck, guinea fowl, or chicken), veal schnitzel, pork tenderloin with herbs, grilled salmon or tuna, and mushroom-based plates such as risotto or wild mushroom tart. It also pairs beautifully with soft to semi-hard cheeses like Tomme, Reblochon, or a mild Comté. Serve at 14–16 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. For maximum expressiveness, decant for 1–2 hours in its youth, or simply open the bottle ahead of time and let it breathe; older bottles (from 6+ years of age) will typically need only a gentle splash-decant to remove sediment.

Producer
Weingut A. Christmann is one of the benchmark estates of the Pfalz and a leading name in German fine wine, especially renowned for its dry Rieslings and increasingly for its precise, Burgundian-inspired Spätburgunder. Family-run for generations and now led by Steffen Christmann (a former president of the VDP, Germany’s top growers’ association), the estate has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Pfalz’s single vineyards on the international stage. Farming is certified organic and practiced biodynamically across prime sites in and around Gimmeldingen and Königsbach, with a strong focus on expressing limestone-rich terroirs through low yields, hand harvesting, and minimalist cellar work. Consistently high critical acclaim and a reputation for purity, finesse, and ageworthiness make Christmann one of the reference producers in the region.
