Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Vogelsang GG shows a pale to medium lemon-yellow hue with a youthful brightness that hints at its intensity and freshness. The nose is finely etched and almost crystalline, with pure citrus notes of lime, lemon zest and crisp green apple (think Granny Smith), layered over wet stone, chalk dust and subtle smoky, flinty nuances. As it opens, delicate herbal and floral tones—lime blossom, lemon verbena, perhaps a hint of fennel—add further complexity. On the palate, this is dry, focused and energetic, with a taut backbone of acidity driving the wine’s precision. Citrus and green orchard fruit are wrapped around a core of salty, chalky minerality that clearly reflects the ancient limestone soils. The texture is both full-bodied and finely chiseled, delivering intensity without heaviness, and a long, linear finish where citrus peel, crushed stone and a gentle smokiness linger. Still very youthful in 2022, it has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining more depth, spice and savory complexity while maintaining its structural backbone.

Production
The Vogelsang vineyard lies above Neustadt an der Weinstraße, stretching up toward the forest edge and ranking among the highest sites in the Pfalz. This historic parcel is rooted in 150-million-year-old limestone layers, giving naturally low yields and a pronounced mineral signature in the wines. Since acquiring the site in 2017, Weingut A. Christmann has farmed it biodynamically, working the soils gently and relying on meticulous hand-harvesting to bring in only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, fermentations proceed spontaneously with native yeasts, allowing the character of the site to speak clearly. The Riesling is then matured in large traditional wooden casks, which provide gentle micro-oxygenation and texture without overt oak flavor, preserving the wine’s clarity, tension and sense of place.

This Riesling Großes Gewächs shines with refined, subtly aromatic cuisine where acidity and minerality can play a leading role. Think delicate dishes like ceviche or crudo of sea bass, sashimi, or simply grilled white fish with lemon and herbs; it’s also outstanding with shellfish, from oysters and scallops to lobster. Classic German pairings such as trout with almond butter or light poultry dishes, as well as fine vegetable preparations (asparagus, fennel, artichoke with citrus and herbs), work beautifully. Serve at 9–11 °C to emphasize its precision and aromatic lift. In its youth, a brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine unfold its citrus, herbal and smoky mineral nuances; with bottle age, decant gently to separate any sediment and allow the more complex tertiary notes to emerge.
